Working in the garden and notice several curled up leaves on my Spice Bush. Uncurling the leaf for a peak, lead to the discovery of a Spice Bush Swallowtail caterpillar. This bush was just planted last fall. This is why those of us growing native plants, do not use pesticides. Changes need to come in the judging of horticulture specimens, since those of us growing to attract pollinators will have leaves that have been eaten if we are successful.

At our May meeting tonight , members toured the pond area to see all the improvements. Penny M presented a very interesting program on Vermicomposting ( worm composting) which produces high quality compost soil and fertilizing liquid by composting food waste rapidly. Several members are planning to try this and we definitely will try this for the school gardens.

Just a friendly reminder to leave your leaves !

You might be shocked to learn just how many wildlife species hide well enough to end up in your yard waste bags.
