Welcome to our first edition of our 'Meet the Member' series! We'll be highlighting executive board members and other awesome folks in our organization who really keep us running. This week we're featuring our President, Artie Bergren (they/them/theirs), and next week we'll feature our VP, Simon Hamilton (he/him/his). Take a look at these questions to learn about Artie!
1. What is your name and pronouns?
My name is Artie Bergren and I use they/them/theirs pronouns.
2. What’s your major and year?
I am a senior majoring in Business Management and minoring in Music.
3. What is your position in HERO?
I am the President for 2019, and I served in 2018 as the Activities Coordinator and in Fall 2017 as the President.
4. What is your identity?
I am a nonbinary le***an. More specific labels I like to use are genderq***r and maverique.
5. What are some hobbies you enjoy?
I’m really into D&D, coffee, playing my ukulele, and reading. David Eddings is my favorite author.
6. How long have you been a member of HERO?
I’ve been involved with HERO since the spring of 2017.
7. What’s your favorite thing about HERO?
My favorite thing about HERO is how we really are a family. We take care of each other, lift each other up, learn from each other, and are there for each other when we need it. I’ve met some of my closest friends from HERO and I’m super grateful for them and the space HERO has provided.
8. Share with us one thing you’d like the community to know about you.
After I graduate, I plan on opening my very own q***r cafe. It’s absolutely been inspired by HERO and all the good I’ve seen HERO do, and I want to continue that kind of work. While q***r bars are great, they’re not accessible for everyone. Sober people, kids, older folks, and folks who might not want a space that’s often used for hookups need a space to be, and I want to provide that. I’m not entirely sure where I’m going to open it yet, but probably either in Kansas City or Des Moines, where I’m from. We’ll see where the future leads me!
