In honor of veterans from Blount County who have passed away over the past year, the Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society has set up a display outside our office at the Blount County Public Library. There is an alphabetical list with over 200 names of veterans who have passed. The display should be up through the end of June, and everyone is invited to come by to pay ohmage to those who helped preserve the freedom we enjoy as Americans.

The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society (BCGHS) is happy to announce that we anticipate mailing the Spring 2026, issue of The Blount Journal later this month (May). To ensure you receive your copy, 2026 annual membership dues ($30) need to be sent in as soon as possible. For your convenience we have three methods for renewal:
1. If you choose to pay by check, our mailing address is BCGHS, P.O. Box 4986, Maryville, TN 37802-4986. Please make out the check to BCGHS and include your contact information, i.e., name, mailing address, email, and phone number.
2. If you choose to pay by credit card, go to the society's web site, https://www.blountcotnhistory.org/, click on the "Membership" tab and follow the instructions. Please contact us if you have any issues with this process.
3. If you choose to pay in person, BCGHS personnel are usually in the office at the Blount County Public Library on Thursdays to accept payment via check or cash.

Tonight, March 10, 2026, we had approximately 110 people in attendance for the year's first quarterly meeting of the Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society. Maryville City Manager, Greg McClain shared an informative presentation on the history of Maryville, Blount County, and Alcoa which included a multitude of early photographs. It was great seeing everyone this evening

The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society's first quarterly program for 2026 will be held at 5:30 p.m. on March 10th in the main gallery of the Blount County Public Library. Maryville City Manager and historian, Greg McClain will lead a program titled, The History of Blount County, Maryville, and Alcoa. The program is FREE ABD OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and we hope to see you there.

This was NOT a data breech, and your credit card information has always been secured. The link between our website and the bank was not connecting and the payments were never processed. This issue has now been resolved, but any purchases made during the time in question may need to be resubmitted. After a significant effort by some of our dedicated volunteers, the new home page for the Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society is up and running. For those interested in joining or renewing their membership for 2026, the option to pay via credit card is now available. Just go to the homepage (https://www.blountcotnhistory.org/), click on the Membership tab and follow the instructions.

The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society will be presenting a free program in the Dorothy Herron Room at the Blount County Public Library on Saturday, December 20, 2025, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Representative samples of Ken Cornett's historic post card collection will be shared by Lester Presley that cover over 100 years of Blount County history. Ken Cornett (1940-2022) was a past Blount County Historian who collected over 400 post cards in his lifetime that contained images of local interest.

When Christmas shopping for that friend or family member that seems to have everything, consider buying them a 2026 gift membership to the Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society. Members receive Spring and Fall issues of The Blount Journal which contains approximately 80 pages of articles on local history. The $30 annual dues also help support the society's other activities associated with sharing and preserving of our cultural heritage. To purchase a gift membership, print out the attached form and fill out the requested information, then mail the completed form and check to BCGHS, P. O. Box 4986, Maryville, TN 37802-4986. The recipients will be notified of their gift along with who the gift was from.

On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, we celebrate Veterans Day in honor of those who served in the military. As many of you know, the November 11th date was chosen in recognition of the ending of hostilities in the Great War which was later known as World War I. The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society has set up a display in the reference section of the Blount County Public Library that includes photographs of area soldiers that served during that war and a restored Maryville Times newspaper that proclaimed the end of the war. We invite everyone to remember all those who served and to come by and see our display.
