So earlier this month I had the chance to work with disaster response folks from around the nation and the Upstate, learning from Helene, listening and engaging with the academic aspects of cutting edge disaster thought leadership and then participating in a virtual emergency response exercise. Many thanks to Spartanburg Spartanburg Co. Emergency Management, the Center for Innovative Leadership at Furman University, and the Consortium for Humanitarian Service and Education for their support over these two important days. Here's some pics and some background to this important event. https://24201646.hs-sites.com/november2025-news-from-furmans-cil?ecid=ACsprvt8FVKdiIKAZBD1mdTDolM1_3phD8TTn2fh1dgJzF9CBlQkcwGwzJEem_Ch3LjS-A_MU0iM&utm_campaign=Monthly%20Newsletters&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz--AqBwab96zL8T9vvntIbnddQx7JXAgK5LZ3GbPRqozXFA1u7q7CRWdEstWWBSopEbbp8Wy_2wALA_uYC0uEeN_GyuUJB2A2WgNBLICWppcT9HDMY0&_hsmi=391067861&utm_content=391067861&utm_source=hs_email

To all my peeps in Western North Carolina who are impacted/affected/responding…

It’s Sunday.

Please (PLEASE!) give yourself permission to rest a little today. Please recognize that your bandwidth is mostly toast.

Please understand that we all need to recharge in order to be able to better respond tomorrow ♥️

Posted a new cover photo to honor my good pal Brigadier General (Ret) Mark Corson PhD. This photo was taken in 1984 in Kloster Forest outside of Harvey Barracks in Kitzingen Germany. We used to do demonstrations for VIPs, involving jumping the brand new M1 Abrams (the original with the 105mm gun) over ramps. This was going to be our tactic for going over the numerous small ditches and canals that were in our deployment area near East Germany. Not recommended in actual practice! This is actually Mark's tank making the jump and you can just see him in the Tank Commander's hatch. The only people in the tank during the jump were the Commander and the Driver and the Commander really got the worst of it. The tank flew like a brick and hit hard, sometimes collapsing the commander's platform and sending him to the bottom of the turret. But it was always good fun, if not the best training. Three cheers Mark and good flying!

Another successful Missouri Hope Exercise in the books! Thanks so all of our partner institutions and staff that make this event happen every year!

The sound of a helicopter echoed Friday afternoon over Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area (MOERA) while a rotation of ambulances with lights flashing moved to and from the site where a simulated natural disaster had left dozens of victims injured and confused.

Congratulations to CHSE board member Dr. Sharon White-Lewis, who was recently awarded the Susan Brockmann-Bell Humanitarian Award for her work with the Medical Reserve Corps. These efforts included coordinating planning and volunteer management efforts in the Kansas City Metro area throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr. White-Lewis continues to be a driving force for good for our students, our organization, and for her community.
