What an incredible few days at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in Providence, Rhode Island!

I'm coming home with so many new ideas, teaching resources, and hands-on learning materials that I can't wait to put to use in our schools. Seeing the creativity and passion that educators pour into their students every single day has been truly inspiring.

To all of my teacher friends... ..we hope you're ready! We would love to partner with you this fall to bring some of these exciting agriculture lessons into your classrooms. I can't wait to share what I've learned with students across Blount County! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ“š

I had to buy a backpack......not because I forgot to pack one, but because I simply ran out of room in my suitcase!
After three days at the National Ag in the Classroom Conference, I'm bringing home an incredible collection of books, lesson plans, hands-on activities, and classroom resources. Every item represents another opportunity to help students in Blount County learn where their food, fiber, and fuel come from.

The Blount County Farm Bureau Women's Leadership Committee is always learning, always growing, and always looking for new ways to make agriculture come alive for the next generation.
I can't wait to put all of these ideas to work in our schools this fall!

Yesterday was day one of the National Ag in the Classroom Conference, and I've already learned so much.
One thing I discovered is that farmers really do see the world a little differently. Most people visit Marthaโ€™s Vineyard and see a coastal town and beautiful beaches. I saw farmland.

I was amazed by the amount of agriculture on the island. Numerous farm stands dot the back roads. Fom the Massey Ferguson tractor I spotted in a field to goats, sheep, cattle, horses, and even a fantastic dairy operation, more than once I thought to myself, โ€œThis could be East Tennessee.โ€

Day 1 of the National Ag in the Classroom Conference

Today's tour of Martha's Vineyard provided a look at how agriculture adapts to the unique challenges of island life. One farm that stood out was Morning Glory Farm, a 65-acre family-owned operation that has been serving the community since 1975.

What I found interesting was the diversity of their operation. In addition to growing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, they offer baked goods, prepared foods, and locally raised meats through a year-round farm stand. Direct marketing allows them to connect consumers directly with agriculture while maximizing the value of what they produce.

I also learned about the importance of farmland preservation on the island. With limited acreage available and continued development pressure, protecting working farms remains a priority for the local agricultural community.
