An important step in saving the Richwood Opera House and Town Hall happened last night at the village council meeting. Council voted 6-0 to repair the fallen roof truss, in order to proceed with its redevelopment. What would you like to see in this building which once was the social center of Richwood?

Check out this beautiful old safe owned by the village of Richwood and manufactured by the Mosler Safe Company of Hamilton, OH. Founded in Cincinnati in 1867, the company moved to Hamilton in 1891. Mosler products were known for their strength and precise engineering. Two of their vaults, installed in a bank in Hiroshima, Japan, survived the nuclear attack. They built the gold vaults for the US Bouillon Depository in Ft. Knox, and the blast door at the US Atomic Energy Commission’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory that weighed 138 tons. Sadly, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2001 and was purchased by Diebold, which continues to manufacture vaults and doors.

Our beautiful Court House at dusk. Completed in 1883, the Ohio Legislature allowed Union County to sell bonds to fund the project at a cost of $135,015. Toledo architect David W. Gibbs provided the design. He designed 5 court houses in Ohio and 2 in Michigan. Gibbs went on to design the Wyoming State Capital. Our Court House is nearly identical to the Henry County Court House In Napoleon. The clock was wound by the janitor until 1942 when a rusty cable snapped. A weight broke thru the skylight of the rotunda and nearly beaned a court reporter. The Court House was renovated from 1992-1994. What are your memories of this grand building?
