Maryland Heights Parks & Recreation

Since incorporation in 1985, the City of Maryland Heights has seen significant growth, both residential and commercial. Every year, approximately 9 million people visit the numerous dining, recreation and entertainment opportunities the City has to offer. With its prime location in the center of the St. Louis Metropolitan area, Maryland Heights is home to more than 1,800 business, as well as over 4,000 hotel rooms.

In September 2019, Maryland Heights was recognized by Forbes as the 11th “Best and Most Affordable Suburb in America.” Parkway and Pattonville, the two school districts that service the community, were highlighted on the list for both having A+ school district grades.

The Parks and Recreation Department was established in 1986 and adopted the mission statement to be “an innovative leader in delivering quality parks and programs.” Over the last 30 plus years, the department has done just that. Aquaport, the City’s municipal outdoor water park, opened in 1998 and has since become a regional attraction boasting multiple water slides, a lazy river, kids’ area and more. Upgrades including a renovated façade and a new water feature are slated to be unveiled summer 2020. In 2017, the City realized a long-time goal, completing construction of the Maryland Heights Community Center. Home of the Parks and Recreation Department, the 92,000 square foot facility has a fitness center, gymnasium, indoor aquatic center, play center, senior lounge and rooms available to rent for parties, meetings and more. Memberships continue to grow and the center has quickly become the heart of the community.

The opening of the Centene Community Ice Center in Sept. 2019 has further solidified Maryland Heights as an innovative leader in the realm of parks and recreation. The ice center is the official practice facility for the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and other primary tenants include the St. Louis Blues Alumni, Lindenwood University, St. Louis AAA Blues and Mercy Healthcare. The Parks and Recreation Department helps run the Learn to Skate program and registration is available at www.marylandheights.com/icecenter.
