As part of our ongoing series commemorating America’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we are pleased to share another song from our recent choral performance.

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was written by poet and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe in November 1861, setting new, religiously inspired lyrics to the popular Union marching song "John Brown's Body."

As part of our ongoing series commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, the next video is now available on our YouTube channel.

Dear Sarah was inspired by the famous “Letter from Sullivan Ballou,” brought to national attention through Ken Burns’s documentary series, The Civil War. Written just one week before he was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run, Ballou’s heartfelt letter to his wife, Sarah, expresses both his deep love for his family and his devotion to the cause he believed in.

Today, we join Taps Across America in honoring those who gave their lives in service.

Please pause with us as we share an excerpt from our recent performance of “God is Nigh.” May this music serve as a moment of remembrance and gratitude for all who have sacrificed for our freedom. 🇺🇸

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Smith River Singers invites you to pause and reflect through this moving performance of Flanders Field from our recent spring concert.

Featuring text by John McCrae and music by Paul A. Aitken, "In Flanders Fields" refers to the WWI battlefield region in Belgium (specifically the Ypres Salient) where intense fighting caused widespread devastation. Canadian physician Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote the famous poem in 1915 after losing a friend, inspired by poppies growing around soldiers’ graves. The poem popularized the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
