🏞️ Economic development doesn't end at the industrial park.

The communities that attract residents, visitors, entrepreneurs, and talent are built on quality of life, unique experiences, and a strong sense of place.

That's why we're excited to see Berkeley Springs State Park once again nominated for USA Today's Best Hot Spring in the United States after finishing among the nation's Top 10 and #1 east of Colorado last year.

Congratulations to our partners in Morgan County for continuing to put Eastern West Virginia on the national map.

Welcome to Inside Region 9, a series highlighting the projects, partnerships, and initiatives shaping communities across Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties.

Each week, we take a closer look at a different area of Region 9’s work and how regional planning supports local impact throughout the Eastern Panhandle.

This week’s focus is Transportation & Connectivity.

Transportation is about more than roads. Trails, sidewalks, pedestrian improvements, regional transportation planning, and roadway infrastructure all play a role in connecting people to jobs, schools, businesses, recreation, and essential services.

Projects that improve mobility and accessibility help strengthen local economies, support public safety, expand transportation options, and enhance quality of life throughout the region.

As we recognize World Bicycle Day on June 3, it's also a reminder of the importance of safe, connected transportation networks that provide opportunities for walking, biking, driving, and transit for residents and visitors alike.

From multi-modal trails and downtown pedestrian improvements to regional transportation planning efforts, these investments help keep our communities connected and moving forward.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we’re grateful for the partnerships, projects, and people helping move the Eastern Panhandle forward every day.

After a busy week focused on infrastructure, transportation, workforce development, and regional collaboration, it feels fitting to end with a reminder that there’s always a little light at the end of the tunnel.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

We wish everyone a safe and meaningful holiday weekend.

Our offices will be closed on Monday, May 25.

Regional growth starts with site readiness.

Across the Eastern Panhandle, communities are working to strengthen infrastructure, improve development readiness, and position strategic sites for future investment.

In Hampshire County, ongoing efforts supported through state site readiness initiatives are helping prepare locations for commercial, industrial, and technology-focused development. Combined with proximity to major transportation corridors, access to Eastern markets, and long-term planning efforts, these investments help create opportunities for sustainable regional growth.

The Eastern Panhandle continues to offer a strong combination of strategic location, workforce availability, infrastructure investment, and regional collaboration, all key factors for business expansion and site selection.

Since it's National Bike to Work Day, let's talk about alternative transportation in the EWVEA Region. We really do have it all!

Transportation infrastructure plays a critical role in economic growth, workforce access, tourism, and regional competitiveness across the Eastern Panhandle.

From highway improvements and trail connectivity to public transit expansion and regional airport access, investments in transportation help connect people, businesses, and communities throughout Berkeley, Jefferson, Morgan, and Hampshire Counties.

Projects such as the Martinsburg Greenway Trail, Route 9 bike path expansion efforts, transit improvements through the Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority, and continued roadway investments all contribute to a stronger and more connected regional economy.

A competitive region depends on strong connections.

Economic growth does not stop at county lines.

Across Berkeley, Jefferson, Morgan, and Hampshire Counties, regional collaboration helps strengthen infrastructure, support workforce development, improve transportation connectivity, and position the Eastern Panhandle for long-term success.

Partnerships between local governments, economic development organizations, transportation providers, educational institutions, and community leaders play an important role in building a stronger and more competitive region.

The Eastern WV Economic Alliance was created around a simple idea: when communities work together, regions grow stronger.

Regional collaboration helps create shared opportunity, stronger infrastructure, and a more resilient future for the Eastern Panhandle.

During National Public Works Week, the Eastern WV Economic Alliance recognizes the professionals, planners, engineers, utility teams, and public works departments who help keep our communities connected and moving forward every day.

This week, we are highlighting the Martinsburg Greenway Trail Project, a transformational infrastructure and quality-of-life investment supported through a $20.8 million federal RAISE grant. The project will create approximately 6.2 miles of multi-use trail, improving connectivity, supporting active transportation, and expanding recreational opportunities in the Eastern Panhandle.

Projects like this demonstrate how infrastructure investment can support economic growth, tourism, community development, and long-term regional competitiveness.

Strong infrastructure creates stronger communities and stronger regional opportunity.
