Wednesday, August 13 is the Memorial of the Founder of the Knights of Columbus, Blessed Michael Joseph McGivney (1852-1890).
In his memory all Knights are encouraged to participate in Noon Mass today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 South Queen Street in Martinsburg.

PRAYER:
God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will.

Lent has begun, with Mass and ashes: "Remember, man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return." Starting today we enter into 40 days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Afterward come acclamation by the fickle crowd, the Passover of the Lord, humiliation, torture and death -- and then rejoicing.
"Repent and believe the Good News.

WHAT CHILD IS THIS?

What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap, is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds' watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and lamb are feeding?
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Raise, raise, the song on high
His mother sings her lullaby
Joy, joy, for Christ is born
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

December 12th is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe. In December 1531, outside Mexico City. Our Lady appeared several times to a man named Juan Diego (1474-1548), an Aztec farmer-laborer who had converted to Christianity. (See Wikipedia for more.) Though there have been many attempts to discredit the apparitions, the miracles, and the cloth bearing the Blessed Mother's image, there is monumental evidence in favor of their authenticity: Within a few months of her appearances at Guadalupe, about nine million Aztecs had been converted to Christianity.

Even though Dec. 8th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mass is obligatory tomorrow, Dec. 9th. Masses at St. Joseph will be at Noon & 6 pm.
Mary's Immaculate conception is one of the most misunderstood doctrines of the Catholic Church -- even by Catholics. It has nothing to do with Mary's being a Virgin when Jesus was conceived and born. Here is a short explanation:
https://copleylibrary.wordpress.com/.../immaculate.../

My own thought is quite simple: Why would the Father, deciding to send his Son into the world not only as God but as a flesh-and-blood person, put Jesus into a sinful woman? That would be like placing the finest possible wine into a dirty bottle. Who in his right mind would do such a thing? Certainly not God the Father. Choosing Mary to be Jesus' mother, then, the Father kept her from all sin, even from the moment of her conception.

January 17th is the feast day of St. Anthony the Great. Because of his importance as a Desert Father and for all Christian monasticism, he is also known as the Father of All Monks. The biography of Anthony's life by Athanasius of Alexandria helped to spread the concept of Christian monasticism, particularly in Western Europe. St. Anthony was among the first monks known to go into the wilderness to live an ascetic life (about AD 270). Wikipedia has more information under Anthony the Great.
