We knew when we rescued Zelda 10 days ago she was heavily pregnant. We had her checked out by one of our vets to make sure we were not missing anything regarding her health. The vet estimated she would give birth in about 10 days. We weighed the decision of spay aborting, but felt she was too far along so we did not terminate the pregnancy.
She went into labor and when no puppies were born, she headed back to the vet. X-rays showed a puppy was stuck in the birth canal and likely not viable. To be honest we were certain all puppies were not viable.
There really is no other option in this situation. Zelda underwent a C-section and spay today. We were shocked to find that 8 puppies survived and are doing well.
Zelda is not out of the woods and is being closely monitored. Since the amniotic sac opened and the puppy passed inside of her, she is at risk for several infections. Her foster momma has not left her side ❤️
We have no idea how many litters this mom was forced to have. We have no doubt she was a breeding machine. We have zero idea why someone chained her at a gas station and left her so far into her pregnancy.
We are surprised and thankful 8 puppies are doing okay. But we are saddened that Zelda has gone through this medical journey in the last few days. She’s tired and now nursing puppies. We know not everyone agrees with terminating pregnancies while some may argue we should have done that. These decisions are hard and not without consequences.
Today is Zelda’s last litter.
Spay and Neuter.
