We’ve talked about why it’s important to LOCK IT., now here’s one reason why secure storage matters so much.

According to the CDC’s Up and Away campaign, approximately 100 young children are brought to the emergency room each day after getting into medicines that were left within reach.

That’s why medications should be stored up, away, and out of sight of young children; kept securely stored so others who shouldn’t have access to them can’t easily get to them.

A few seconds of access can turn into an emergency. Taking the time to choose a safer storage location is a simple step that can help protect children in your home.

And if you need an added layer of security, WCPC offers FREE medication lock boxes to Weakley County residents.

🔒 LOCK IT. Keep medications secure, out of reach, and out of sight.

A little learning, a little service, and a whole lot of fun! Our THRIVE Youth Coalition made the most of fall break at our lock-in!

Students participated in customer service training with Hayes Table Co (Whitney Hayes) and explored real life scenarios surrounding va**ng with our HHP Public Health intern Olivia during her “Behind the Choice” presentation, discussing how to make safe, healthy, responsible choices.

They also prepared Halloween goodies with WCPC resources to share throughout Weakley County, put their knowledge to the test with trivia, and won some really fun prizes!

Of course, we made plenty of time for karaoke, games, hooting and hollering, and just enjoying being together. We loved spending the evening with this crew and watching them learn, give back, and have an all around good time!

In our last post, we talked about recognizing the warning signs of bullying. But why is it so important to notice those changes?

Because the impact of bullying can reach far beyond what we see.

Like ripples spreading across water, the effects of bullying can extend into multiple areas of a young person's life.

According to StopBullying.gov, young people who experience bullying may face:

-Emotional challenges: Increased risk of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
-Academic difficulties: Declining grades, decreased school participation, or avoiding school altogether.
-Social struggles: Difficulty maintaining friendships, feelings of isolation, and challenges building relationships.
-Physical health concerns: Headaches, stomachaches, and changes in sleeping or eating patterns.

These effects aren't always visible, and every young person who experiences bullying has a different story. That's why recognizing the warning signs is only the beginning.

Taking the time to listen, check in, and offer support can make a meaningful difference. By understanding how deeply bullying can affect someone, we can help create environments where young people feel safe, supported, and connected.

You know what medications you have. Now, let’s make sure they’re stored safely. 🔒 This week, we’re moving to the second step in prescription safety: LOCK IT.

Keeping medications securely stored and out of reach of those who shouldn’t have access to them is an important part of medication safety at home. That includes thinking beyond young children such as family members, friends, and visitors who may also have access to medications that are left unsecured.

Secure storage adds another layer of protection by helping reduce opportunities for accidental access and prescription medication misuse. It’s a simple action you can take at home that can be an important part of prevention.

And if you need a safer way to store medications, WCPC offers FREE medication lock boxes to Weakley County residents! 🔐

This week, we’ll be sharing more about why secure storage matters and simple ways you can make LOCK IT. part of your medication safety routine.

🔢 COUNT IT. Know what you have.
🔒 LOCK IT. Keep it secure.
📍 DROP IT. Safely dispose of what you no longer need.

MYTH: There is nothing I can do to help.

There’s always something we can do to help create a more supportive community.

According to SAMHSA, offering support to someone experiencing mental health challenges can be as simple as showing concern, listening without judgment, and helping them find resources or professional support when needed. You don’t have to have all the answers to make a positive difference.

Prevention is also about the culture we create around mental health. When we replace misconceptions with understanding and make conversations about mental health feel normal and accepted, we help create an environment where people are more comfortable seeking support when they need it.

As we wrap up our Mental Illness Awareness Week Myth Buster series, remember that awareness is only the beginning. Challenging stigma, building connection, supporting healthy coping, and making it easier to ask for help are all ways we can help strengthen mental health in our community.

We all have a role in prevention. Keep checking in, keep listening, and keep creating space for conversations about mental health, not just this week, but every day.

You’ve learned why it’s important to COUNT IT., now it’s time to put it into action! 🔢

Take five minutes today to check your medicine cabinet. Know what medications you have, take note of anything that is expired or no longer needed, and make sure you can account for the medications that should be there.

Once you know what you have, think about what comes next. Medications you still need should be stored securely, and medications that are expired or no longer needed should be properly disposed of. WCPC offers FREE medication lock boxes, and there are eight permanent medication drop box locations throughout Weakley County to help you take those next steps:

Gleason City Hall
Greenfield Police Department
Martin Police Department
Crisp Hall at UTM
CVS Martin
Sharon City Hall
Walmart in Martin
Weakley County Sheriff's Office

But don’t let today be the only time you check. Making medication checks part of your regular routine can help you stay aware of what’s in your home and notice when something has changed.

Small actions at home can be an important part of prevention. COUNT IT. starts with knowing what you have, and can help you recognize when it’s time to LOCK IT. or DROP IT.

Take five today and make COUNT IT. a habit.

Next up: 🔒 LOCK IT.

MYTH: Mental health and substance use have nothing to do with each other.

According to SAMHSA, mental health conditions and substance use disorders can sometimes occur together for a variety of reasons. Some people may turn to substances as a way of coping with mental health symptoms, but experiencing a mental health challenge does not mean someone will develop a substance use disorder.

This is why prevention looks at the whole person. Strengthening healthy coping skills, building supportive relationships, and helping people access support can provide healthier ways to navigate stress and difficult emotions.

Substance use prevention isn’t only about preventing the use of substances, it’s also about strengthening the protective factors that help people make healthy choices and cope with challenges.

Supporting mental health is part of prevention.

Now that we know what bullying is and what it can look like, the next step is knowing the signs.

Young people may not always tell an adult when they are experiencing bullying. That’s why it’s important for parents, caregivers, educators, and other trusted adults to pay attention to changes in a young person’s behavior or routines.

Warning signs can include unexplained injuries; lost or damaged belongings; changes in eating or sleeping habits; declining grades or loss of interest in school; avoiding school; sudden loss of friends or social situations; and feelings of helplessness or decreased self-esteem.

It’s also important to remember that not every young person who is bullied will show warning signs, and these changes can sometimes point to other concerns. When something seems different, checking in and having an open conversation can help adults better understand what a young person may be experiencing.

Prevention starts with paying attention. Recognizing changes, checking in early, listening, and staying connected can help create the supportive relationships and environments young people need to feel safe and supported.

There’s a place for all kinds of skills in prevention! 💼💛🖤

We enjoyed connecting with students at the Dresden Middle School career fair and sharing more about the work of Weakley County Prevention Coalition, and the many different career paths that can lead to prevention.

From public health, social work, psychology, and education to marketing, communications, art, and more, prevention brings together people with a wide range of backgrounds and strengths, all working toward a common goal: building healthier, safer communities.

We loved getting to introduce students to the world of prevention and show them how their own interests and areas of study could make an impact in this field!
