Webster County Pantry Inc.

The Webster County Pantry & Thrift Store - located at 51 Ferguson Drive, off South Elm St., in Marshfield - is open to help those in need on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of the month, 9 am to 2 pm, and the Fridays that follow, 9 am to noon. After qualifying, each family can get assistance with groceries once per month. Pantry director, Gerald Nehl - who has been with the organization for 27 of its 31 years - purchases food from area grocery stores and restaurants to distribute to residents.

Volunteers are always needed to help with weekly distribution and to weigh and repackage food. Able-bodied volunteers are especially needed to lift heavy boxes and other items on Fridays, since youth and school groups can only help on Saturdays during the school year. What You Will Need to Qualify for Assistance:

Presented by the person whose name will be on the application form:

Piece of mail with current name and address.

Picture ID of head of household (driver’s license, ID card, etc.).

Current social security cards for everyone living in the household.

(Proxy pickups must be approved by Pantry personnel.)

Located in the former Pantry building (to the east), the Thrift Store is open during the same hours mentioned earlier. Everyone is welcome to browse and shop at garage sale prices, and all proceeds go toward purchasing food for the Pantry. There is a wide variety of donated items, including clothing, furniture, household items, toys, and knick-knacks. Donations are accepted, as well, at the store. If you have a large amount of items to give, please send a message or call the Pantry office at 417-859-3525, and it can be picked up. Thrift Store director, Betty Funk, has been volunteering with the organization for about 30 years and is excited to see some of the unique things that are donated. She added that victims of house fires and other emergencies can go to the Thrift Store for help with needed items.

The Pantry began as a mission of the Marshfield United Methodist Church in 1988. Long-time volunteer, Vernon Wolf, said former Marshfield resident, Neva Schroder, and her husband, Bill, started the mission from their home. He said the church would donate money, and she would buy groceries from Ozarks Food Harvest to distribute. After that, it moved to Young’s Shopping Center and then to the current Thrift Store location - the large, yellow, metal building - on Ferguson Drive. Fund-raising for the new Pantry building began in 2012, and by fall of that year, construction began. The building was ready for the move in Jan. 2015.

The Pantry was incorporated and acquired 501C status on May 21, 1997. They officially dropped the “Food” from their name - since they provide more than food - but many still know it as the Webster County Food Pantry. By that time, 12 churches were supporting the Pantry, as were the Post Office, Lions Club, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts, among others.

The Pantry and Thrift Store are completely staffed by local organizations and people from the community, with operations directed by Nehl and overseen by a board of directors.

In information provided by Nehl, it was stated, “We are reaching our goals by working with local churches and other organizations, such as the Division of Family Services, Ministerial Alliance, OACAC, Share Your Christmas and others.”
