The auxiliary tank of an RAF MkIXc Spitfire is being filled with beer before being flown to Allied Soldiers in Normandy - 1944

During the Normandy campaign, RAF Spitfires were used in an unusual role; transporting beer to the Allied Soldiers in Normandy.
The Heneger & Constable breweries donated free beer to the Soldiers after DDay, but there was no room in the supply logistics chain for beer.

RAF Personnel came up with an idea of using Auxiliary tanks to carry beer instead of fuel. Spitfires in Normandy equipped with carrying pylons were often sent to the UK for "maintenance" or "liaison" duties.
They would then often return with full beer tanks fitted under the wings.

Thanks Bo Fønss for his assistance
