📢 ICE Detains Longtime Community Leader—We Must Speak Out! 🚨

Yesterday, ICE agents laughed as they detained Jeanette Vizguerra—a mother, grandmother, and tireless advocate for immigrant rights—outside her job, without warning, without due process, without even a valid deportation order. A beloved leader in Colorado’s immigrant justice movement, Jeanette has fought for so many. Now, we must fight for her.

And Foothills Unitarian Acting Senior Minister the Rev. Sean Neil-Barron reminds us, this is also about more than Jeanette. This is a pattern—activists, green card holders, and asylum seekers are being targeted, detained, and deported under an administration that wields immigration enforcement as a weapon of fear.

Unitarian Universalists are in solidarity with all who seek sanctuary. Our faith compels us to love boldly. Our values demand that we take risks. Our democracy demands our action.

Foothills Unitarian has shared more details about Jeanette’s detention and the broader pattern of political targeting. Read their full post here: 🔗 dispatches.foothillsuu.org/2025/03/ice-detains-longtime-community-leader-we-must-speak-out/

Please join us for our next meeting on Sunday, November 10, at 10 A.M. in the YMCA/YWCA Board Room.

The topic will be an open discussion about living the UUA Principles in today's social realities. Les Davis will lead the discussion.

The 7 Unitarian Universalist Principles are:

1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations;
3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

A Zoom option is available—check your email or message for info, if needed.

Our next meeting date will be Sunday, October 13, at 10:00 at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA board room. We will use this Sunday as a time to share our favorite poetry or a piece of writing. Please bring as many poems to share as you like or just join to listen to poetry or prose being read. You may plan to read the poetry or pass it on to someone who will read it for you. All are welcome.

09/07/2024

We will meet this coming Sunday, September 8, at our usual place in the Board Room of the YMCA/YWCA of Marshalltown at 10 A.M.

The topic of this meeting will be an internal discussion, "What About the Future?" We want all interested persons to weigh in on the question about our future plans. In other words, do we want to continue meeting formally?

This discussion has been ongoing among the few persons who have continued to attend gatherings, both formal and social. Considering the regularly low attendance, there is a sense that it may be time for a change.

Everyone's opinion is important, so if you are unable to be at the meeting on Sunday, please weigh in by emailing or messaging here.

08/22/2024

Our single August meeting will be a social gathering at Riverview Park this coming Sunday, August 25, at 10:00 A.M. It promises to be a warm sunny day, so look for us in a shady spot on the east side of the park. Bring along a lawn chair, and perhaps an extra one for the bicyclists.
