Delaware drivers are being targeted by a smishing scam (April 9, 2026) involving text messages about fake, unpaid traffic or toll violations. These messages threaten registration suspension to pressure victims into clicking phishing links to make payments.

* The Delaware DMV does not contact customers by text to demand payment. *

What to Do: Delete the text immediately and do not click any links.

How to Report: Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) and report to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
Verify Information: Check your account status directly at myDMV.delaware.gov or ezpassde.com.

These scams often create a false sense of urgency, claiming a "final notice" or upcoming license suspension to steal personal or financial information.

Help Is Always Available: 24/7 Human Trafficking Hotline

The New Castle County Division of Police established Delaware’s first and only Human Trafficking Hotline, providing direct access to law enforcement and victim services for victims and concerned individuals. In addition, a specialized Detective unit has been established to focus on drug and human trafficking investigations throughout New Castle County and surrounding areas.

In the United States, human trafficking occurs in two main forms: s*x trafficking and forced labor. The term “human trafficking” refers to crimes in which traffickers exploit adults or children for profit by forcing them to perform labor or engage in commercial s*x. Any commercial s*x act involving a person under 18 is considered a crime, regardless of whether force, fraud, or coercion is involved.

The New Castle County Human Trafficking Hotline is available 24/7 for anyone in need of assistance or wishing to report a suspected incident in New Castle County, throughout the State of Delaware, or in surrounding areas.

Automated Speed Enforcement Expands to Milltown Road & McKennans Church Road

(Wilmington, DE 19808) The New Castle County Police Department will implement automated speed enforcement along Milltown Road, from McKennans Church Road to Duncan Road, and along McKennans Church Road, from Milltown Road to Bardell Drive, to enhance traffic safety in these residential areas.

As part of this initiative:

• “Photo Enforced” signs will be placed alongside speed limit signs to alert motorists that automated enforcement is active.

• Beginning April 15, 2026, the system will begin monitoring speeds. A 30-day warning period will follow activation, during which drivers traveling 6 MPH or more over the speed limit will receive a warning.

• After the warning period, civil violations will be issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit by 6 MPH or more. These violations are civil penalties and do not result in points on a driver’s record or affect insurance rates.

• The automated speed enforcement units are mobile and may be repositioned at various locations within the designated residential enforcement zone along Milltown Road and McKennans Church Road.

This enforcement follows the passage of state legislation, including Senate Bill 200 of the 153rd Delaware General Assembly, Section 137, which authorizes automated speed enforcement for speeds of 6 miles per hour or more in response to residents’ ongoing concerns about speeding on Milltown Road and McKennans Church Road.

New Castle County does not collect revenue generated from these violations.

The New Castle County Police Department encourages all motorists to obey posted speed limits and drive safely to protect residents and all roadway users.

Spotted Lanternflies will soon be hatching. SQUISH!

Next month, as the weather gets warmer, spotted lanternfly eggs will begin to hatch. Spotted lanternfly are an invasive species that attack trees, shrubs, and crops. Newly hatched spotted lanternfly nymphs are small, wingless, black insects with white spots. They grow rapidly and, within a couple of months, transform into slightly larger, wingless, red insects with white spots — and then into winged adults about one inch long with black spots.

Heading into the great outdoors? Look before you leave! Spotted lanternfly are notorious hitchhikers. Before leaving any outdoor area – a park, campsite, trail, or orchard – inspect your car, camper, gear, and equipment for egg masses, nymphs, or adults. Egg masses look like smeared mud or putty and can be laid on almost any flat surface: bumpers, trailers, firewood, lawn furniture, and more.
