Armed Forces Day, celebrated on the third Saturday in May, was established in 1949 to honor all branches of the U.S. military under a single, unified holiday. It was created by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days following the consolidation of the military under the Department of Defense.
