Our Wildfire Mitigation Crew hard at work!! With the help of Full Circle Forestry, we removed over 20 cubic yards of Helene woody debris from around 4 homes in order to reduce their risk of wildfire.

The numbers:
8 Cubic Yards of Logs Cut and Removed and Disposed
8 Cubic Yards of Woody Debris Burned in our BioChar Kiln
5 1/2 Cubic Yards of Rounds cut and split for Firewood Banks and Homeowner

Thank you to Madison County NC Soil & Water and NRCS for teaming up with us to host a bank stabilization workshop! We dug into assessing eroding banks, the role that various types of plants play in stabilizing soil, invasive management and project maintenance, and available resources for landowners.

We appreciate everyone who came out. It was a great mix of natural resource professionals, curious landowners, community members, and folks simply interested in learning more about how we can protect and restore our waterways. We loved the opportunity to connect, engage, and discuss challenges and potential solutions.

Best of all, we wrapped up our day with delicious lunch from Zuma Coffee & Provisions and a walk to Blannahassett Island to see the restoration and riparian plantings there.

Thank you to Working Lands for Wildlife, Southern Waters, University of Georgia and CHIRAM for sponsoring this and other workshops across the region to help landowners learn more about methods and resources for bank stabilization.

For more than 50 years, Resource Conservation & Development Councils (RC&Ds) have been working collaboratively to connect landowners with land and water conservation practices.

Mountain Valleys RC&D has been proud to collaborate with Blue Ridge RC&D and Southwestern RC&D to help landowners across Western North Carolina recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene.

For many landowners, watching their land wash away has been one of the most painful and overwhelming parts of recovery. Recovery extends beyond the four walls and watching land continue to erode away in heavy storms is a heavy mental burden for landowners who have already lost so much.

By bringing three RC&Ds together, we’ve been able to regularly share what's working and what could work better. This partnership helps us leverage resources so that we can work towards healthier, more resilient watersheds for our rural communities.

This work was made possible by a grant from The American Red Cross and a grant from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund.

Today we reflect with gratitude on a critical funder for the restoration of Blannahassett Island in Marshall. Funding for this project was provided by a grant from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina.

Every time we visit Blannahassett Island, we're struck by how dramatically it has changed. It's hard to believe it's the same place where we first rolled up our sleeves in October 2024. Thank you to all our partners, most notably the Town of Marshall, NC and Madison County NC Soil & Water, our many volunteers, everyone who has showed up in countless ways to pitch in, and thank you to The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, without whom this work would not have been possible.
