The Maunesha River Alliance's July 19 workday can be summed up in one word. Flexibility
First, the workday was scheduled to start at 9am, but was pushed back to 11am due to the weather. After the four volunteers met at the Socha Conservancy at 11am, the group changed the work location to two other areas in the area.
At their first stop, the MRA worked on a newly fallen tree at the intersection of Cherry Ln and Canal Rd. The relatively small crew removed the underbrush from the tree, as well as cleaning up other obstructions in the area. Two people cut and roped pieces of the deadfall while two people on shore brought in and bucked up the logs. For those familiar with the Maunesha River, the deadfall was located where the river reaches its northernmost peak just south of Canal Road.
After spending an hour at their first stop, the MRA packed up shop and moved to stop number two on a plot of land behind the Maple Heights subdivision. The MRA's first goal on the land was to open up the nearly clogged railroad trestle bridge. Almost all of the six spans of the bridge were blocked up, with a narrow path being the only passage for paddlers. The group spent another hour clearing two of the six spans before calling it a day...so they thought.
On the walk back out, the crew noticed two more recently fallen trees spanning the river. An hour and a half later, the crew put two six foot holes in the trees before calling it a day.
In total, the four-person crew removed five blockages in three and a half hours on the Maunesha River, quite a productive day considering the hurdles they faced.
The Maunesha River Alliance will be back in Waterloo next Saturday, July 26. Meet in Firemen's Park at 9am if you would like to assist our volunteer group. We will be parked near the second foot bridge in the park. The MRA will be teaming up with Capitol Water Trails in a cleanup from the Firemen's Park to Highway 19.
Besides our cleanup workdays, we are looking for someone to take trips, fly a drone, take photos, perform water quality testing, and assist us in fundraising. If you can help us at all in any way, please reach out to us.
If you are a paddler or notice any issues, we welcome you to report any areas of concern that you might encounter. If you come across a blockage, taking a photo that includes the GPS location would be incredibly helpful. This will assist us in scouting the area and is a wonderful way to support the MRA. You can send the photos to [email protected] or share them on our MRA group page on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1224071614420672
Please let us know if you have any other questions and most importantly, stay safe out there!
