Where are We Wednesday? The Answer: Marshall Choral Society

The Marshall Community Foundation granted $20,000 to support the Marshall Choral Society back in 2024. Its purpose was to create and maintain a community chorus, giving Marshall and surrounding communities an opportunity to learn, practice, and perform, at the highest level of quality. Since its founding in 2023, MCS has become an iconic group in Marshall. They perform two major concerts a year, one in the spring and one during the holidays, often times selling out! It is truly a group that can be enjoyed by all.

Where are We Wednesday? The Answer: Gordon Elementary School

The Marshall Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) granted $15,500 from the Marshall Youth Fund to Gordon Elementary School PCO to support the enhancement of the outdoor classroom at the school. YACkers were interested in the PCO’s desire to make the outdoor classroom a comfortable space conducive to learning. The most notable upgrade was the sunshade. This would decrease the temperature of the classroom while also protecting the students from harmful UV rays. The outdoor classroom is used daily, weather permitting. This grant has allowed Gordon teachers to incorporate outdoor learning into their curricula and provide an engaging learning environment for students.

Where are We Wednesday? The Answer: The Haven

For more than 20 years, various Marshall Community Foundation funds have granted more than $120,000 to The Haven. Notable grants supported the Inasmuch House playground project, new flooring for the men’s life recovery program, several renovation projects, and, most recently, repairs to fire safety equipment.

For 70 years, the Haven of Rest has been a steady presence in Battle Creek. The Haven was originally a men’s homeless shelter and has expanded its programs to include men’s and women’s life recovery, a women, children, and family shelter, veterans in progress, Calhoun County Jail Ministry, Adult Foster Care, and the children’s GAP program. Executive Director Daniel Jones believes in always asking, “What can we do for you?”

The next few months are always challenging for The Haven. Donations of any amount help them maintain their critical services. You can go to their website https://thehavenbc.org/ or scan the QR code on the last slide.

Join us in celebrating Give Like Dolly Day with a donation in support of our local Dolly Parton's Imagination Library fund.
To support a love of reading, families can sign up to receive an age-appropriate book delivered for free every month until their child turns 5.
It costs approximately $31 per year per child; this is made possible with donations to local affiliates like Marshall District Library.

Where are We Wednesday? The Answer: Hughes Elementary

The Fund for Marshall awarded $7,000 to the Hughes Elementary Parent Council Organization. The grant, along with their own fundraising, allowed them to purchase the All Kids Bike Program for Hughes Elementary School. It is an 8-week program that starts with students learning how to balance on a bike and eventually leads up to riding on two wheels. The kit came with 24 balance-to-pedal bikes, helmets, a teacher bike, and a storage rack. The ability to ride a bike develops physical and mental well-being and instills confidence. Teaching bike riding at an early age provides the knowledge and a positive foundation for a lifelong skill. The P.E. teacher, Chad Wager, has committed to implementing the program into PE class, ensuring all students get the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike.
