Governor Newsom has officially proclaimed April 28 as California Ocean Day. 🌊

California’s 1,100-mile coastline is home to one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth — a living testament to what it means to fight for something worth protecting. Long before California was a state, tribal communities stewarded these coastlines with profound care and wisdom, and that legacy of stewardship continues today.

California is making real progress. The state is on track toward conserving 30% of its coastal waters by 2030. Last year, California’s Marine Protected Area Network became the first ecological network ever certified on the IUCN Green List. And this year marks the 50th anniversary of the California Coastal Act — one of the most consequential environmental laws ever enacted, which enshrined public access to the shore and set a national standard for coastal stewardship that endures to this day.

We’re proud to be part of this legacy — showing up for this coastline one cleanup, one paddle, one piece of litter at a time. A healthy ocean starts at the shoreline, and every action counts.

We paddled to North Pelican and Pita beaches to remove trash from shorelines, document waste, and contribute data to protect Tomales Bay — a Wetland of International Importance.

We’re so grateful for our amazing partners and volunteers who helped make this happen!

🌼Wildflower Season is Here!🌼

Now through May, admire California’s coast blooming with orange poppies (CA’s state flower!), yellow goldfields, purple lupines, and much more!

Where to see wildflowers in bloom/Dónde ver flores silvestres en plena floración:

🌸Marin County/Condado de Marin: Point Reyes National Seashore, Bolinas Ridge, Chimney Rock Trail, Tomales Point Trail, Mount Tamalpais State Park

🌷Sonoma County/Condado de Sonoma: Sonoma Coast State Park, Sonoma Valley Regional Park, Kortum Trail, Pomo Canyon Trial, Helen Putnum Regional Park

🪻Mendocino County/Condado de Mendocino: Mendocino Headlands State Park, Manchester State Park, Russian Gulch State Park, Van Damme State Park, Navarro Point Trail, Mendocino Cliffs Trail

To help these vibrant, colorful landscapes flourish, make sure to follow Leave No Trace’s principles:

Know Before You Go: Familiarize yourself with any regulations regarding wildflower viewing and use reusable containers for any food or liquids you bring

Trash Your Trash: Help leave the environment better than you found it by packing out everything you bring and picking up any extra litter along the way

What To Do With P**p: Use public bathrooms when available, not trails or beaches

Being Considerate of Coastal Communities: Stay on designated trails and please do not pick, dig up, or step on flowers

Not all species deserve to survive. Some belong in the history books. ♻️

From crushed cans to plastic containers, the items most commonly found on California’s coast tell a story about our habits—and our impact. In this post, we’re highlighting a few of the “species” of trash showing up on our beaches and why it’s time for them to disappear for good.

Swipe through to meet these waste offenders and learn simple ways you can help protect our coastline.

Earth Day is a reminder that this planet is worth fighting for! 🌍

Every time we head outdoors, we bring more than just ourselves. Single-use items, forgotten wrappers, and small bits of litter add up faster than we think. Over time, that impact takes a real toll on the ecosystems and wildlife that make our planet so special.

But here's the thing: Earth Day isn't just one day. We believe that small, intentional choices — made every time you visit the outdoors — make a big difference.

By following Leave No Trace principles, each of us plays a part in keeping these coastlines vibrant, wild, and welcoming for everyone.

When we all do our part, we get to enjoy:
🌿 Healthier coastal ecosystems
🦅 Thriving wildlife on land and sea
🏖️ Beautiful, shared spaces for generations to come

This Earth Day, make it a practice, not just a moment.
