6th Annual Art Gala

The ABA is just 4 weeks away from the launch of our major fundraising project to raise money to renovate the farmhouse at the Smith Farm on the Bailey Mountain Preserve in Mars Hill. This is the “icing on the cake” for the public park which celebrates the heritage of western North Carolina barns and farms. Many of you have watched as we have renovated or reconstructed the barns there. Now we want to tie it all together with a Welcome / Discovery Center with exhibits about the lower Smith Farm—the barns as well as the ecology.
The 6th Annual Art Pastoral Palette Benefit will be Friday, May 22nd and Saturday, May 23rd. Great fun both days. The Friday evening ticketed event offers samplings of food and background music by Abbey Winters. Enjoy savory offerings plus sweets as well as complimentary wine and beer choices while mingling with the artists who will have several of their paintings for sale. The Friday evening gala (casual dress) is from 5:30pm to 8pm. On Saturday, May 31st, the event continues free and open to the public with an opportunity to purchase the artists’ works from 11am to 3pm. The event will be at the historic Ivy Building on the A-B Tech campus at 10 Genevieve Circle just off Victoria Road.
TICKETS/ RESERVATIONS available by check or on the website (click the PayPal button). For details and tickets: https://appalachianbarns.org/pastoral-palette-art-show-gala/. If you have questions, Call 828 380-9146 or email [email protected]

One of our favorite events during the year is taking all Madison County 4th grade students on a field trip to the Smith Farm at the Bailey Mountain Preserve. Students are led by our researcher Taylor Barnhill to each of the 5 barns to learn about our heritage through the barn stories. They are then given the opportunity to sketch one of the barns. ABA decided to make a 2026 calendar of some of their sketches. The Madison County NC Visitor Center at 56 S. Main Street in Mars Hill has a display of these and the calendar -- which is offered for sale for $15 (fundraiser for the ABA and the Smith Farmstead). Stop by anytime between 10am and 4pm Monday through Saturday to see the artistic talent of these students.

Great day on Saturday with our Barn Day event. Lots of sunshine, tour with Taylor Barnhill showcasing the 5 barns on the Smith Farm. Music by Roger Howell and a silent auction. Such a fun way to spend time enjoying our heritage in a beautiful setting. Stop by the Bailey Mountain Preserve and see the progress the ABA has made with the two newly-reconstructed barns. Open to the public dawn to dusk every day. Informative signs provide an insight to the history.
