Conserve Mt. Marquette and Marquette's Heartwood Forestland

Conserve Mt. Marquette and Marquette's Heartwood Forestland The future of Mt. Marquette and the Marquette City Heartwood Forestland will soon be determined by the Marquette City Commission.

The 2,243 acre pristine property rests within Marquette City limits and neighboring townships. It contains environmentally fragile landscape and provides innumerable recreation activities, including hiking, running, snowshoeing, fishing, mountain biking. This property is an irreplaceable destination for residents and tourists and is part of the fabric of Marquette. Background:
The Heartwood Fores

tland was purchased by the City of Marquette in 2005 for 5 million dollars. The original intent for use of the property, as stated in a 2006 resolution, included preservation of the most environmentally fragile property, recreation opportunities and development of up to 350 acres within the incorporated city boundaries. The use of the property has been extensively deliberated, initially by an Ad Hoc Committee chosen by the Mayor. Their recommendations were finalized in early 2010 and have been refined by the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission will soon officially present their report to the City Commission for approval. Please reference the map within the photo album for details. Note that the parcels for potential sale are in red. The current document advises sale of parcels along the 553 corridor for potential development. In addition, roughly 600 acres within the Township has been deemed “surplus” and suitable for sale. This acreage contains parts of the Pioneer (red) and Morgan Creek (green) trails. Areas containing Morgan Creek and the Carp River have been labeled as potential conservation property and are listed in green. Other parcels in purple, such as those including the area around Mt Marquette, are listed as deferred development. The purple parcels will be part of a Future Planned Area and subject to public comment at some point.

The South Trails of Marquette are under threat of development (Parcels 9,10,11,12,35 in above map). Concerned trail users are asked to make public comment at the upcoming City Commission meeting on Monday June 11th! The City places a priority on city resident and business owner comments. The messages we need to convey are:

1. The trails make an economic contribution to the City.

2. The NTN and public need to be a part of planning for these parcels.

3. Parcel 35 is of critical importance as the gateway to the trail system and should be deemed recreation property or sold for a reasonable cost to the NTN.

4. The other parcels need to have permanent and substantial trail easements.

Personal phone calls and email messages to the Commissioners are also effective!

Vote November 5th for Marquette City Commission!

Here is how the candidates responded at a recent panel to the question: "What is your vision for the Heartwood property?"

Sarah Reynolds said the property is beautiful and should be left completely alone aside from recreational purposes

Tony Tollefson said he was involved with the original decision to purchase the property and he would support careful planning in the area

Dave Campano supported a 20 development/80 preservation plan, stating the city needs to increase its tax base

Mike Plourde also supported a 20/80 approach although he talked alot about "recreational development" - whatever that means.
