April is ! Throughout April, student groups from Northern Michigan University spent their Sundays volunteering with Room at the Inn for three Spring Cleaning Days of Service! 🐝🌱

Volunteers worked with our staff to refresh our spaces before the summer by sorting clothing donations in the basement, tidying up the sleeping areas upstairs, and cleaning up the backyard at the Warming Center. Participating NMU groups included Beta Alpha Psi, Van Antwerp Hall, and the Pre-Clinical Psychology Club.

We are so thankful for volunteer service from NMU students and the Marquette community 🏠❤️

Today, we would like to wish a very happy 91st birthday to Room at the Inn Founder, Helen McCormick! At our Awareness Concert on Saturday, April 4, The Make-Believe Spurs led the crowd in singing 'Happy Birthday' for Helen!

Room at the Inn was founded in 2007 by a small number of churches in Marquette County, organized by Helen McCormick. It was Helen who saw the need for emergency shelter in our community and dedicated herself to ensuring that Room at the Inn establish itself as a private non-profit organization that provides food, shelter, and assistance to those individuals transitioning out of homelessness.

Thank you to our panelists and our team members staffing the resource table for sharing your passion for the work we do. Thank you to United Way of Marquette County / Yoopers United for connecting the community with our mission through volunteer service opportunities.

Thank you to our performers, The Make-Believe Spurs and Willowby, for bringing together our community through your music. Thank you to Anna, Grace, and Dr. Cheng from the NMU Department of Social Work for inspiring and making this event possible.

Last, but certainly not least, thank you to all of you who spent your Saturday night with us. We are deeply grateful for our community that continues to show up for our neighbors experiencing homelessness 🏠❤️

Ahead of our Awareness Concert this Saturday, April 4, we’ll be introducing our panelists throughout the week so you can get to know them!

Today we are introducing our panelist: Rod DesJardins!

Rod recently joined the Room at the Inn Board of Directors in February 2026, but has been involved with RATI for many years. Rod recently retired from the Michigan Department of Human Services, Housing and Homelessness Division, where he administered the SOAR (Social Security Outreach, Access and Recovery) Program for the northern half of the State of Michigan.

Rod has worked for many of our community partners including: Community Action Alger Marquette as the Housing Director, Superior Alliance for Independent Living as a Disability Advocate, and Pathways Community Mental Health as a Vocational Program Coordinator. Rod also served on the Munising City Commission for 26 years, including 20 terms as Mayor.

“I have worked with people with disabilities and people experiencing homelessness for the last 25 years in all 15 U.P. counties. I try to stay active in my retirement doing something that I know well and have some experience doing,” Rod said about his recent appointment to the RATI Board.

Come listen to Rod and our other panelists on Saturday, April 4th at Ore Dock Brewing Co.! Doors open at 6.

Ahead of our Awareness Concert on Saturday, April 4, we’ll be introducing our panelists throughout the week so you can get to know them!

Today we are introducing our panelist: Stephen Bortizki, BA, CHW!

Stephen, also known as Steve, joined the Room at the Inn staff in June 2025 as Shelter Support Staff, starting on overnight security shifts and now working in the Warming Center kitchen. When he’s not in the kitchen, you can find Steve around the shelter on various repair and maintenance projects. Steve holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and recently finished his Community Health Worker certification through the Northern Michigan University Center for Rural Health.

Steve said he feels drawn to this work because of childhood experiences volunteering with his father at a shelter in New Orleans. “Throughout my life, I've continued to feel a pull toward helping individuals experiencing homelessness. Working at Room at the Inn has given me the opportunity to reconnect with that early sense of purpose. In many ways, it feels like returning to where my concern for the homeless first began — only now with the ability to contribute in a meaningful and consistent way.”

Come listen to Steve and our other panelists on Saturday, April 4th hosted at Ore Dock Brewing Co.! Doors open at 6.

Ahead of our Awareness Concert this Saturday, April 4, we’ll be introducing our panelists throughout the week so you can get to know them!

Today we are introducing our panel moderator: Leila Heuser!

Leila just joined the Room at the Inn staff in January 2026 as Overnight Security at the Warming Center and The Salvation Army Marquette Overflow Shelter. Leila is now an Administrative Assistant and is working on planning our Recuperative Care Program.

Leila is a junior at Northern Michigan University studying Cognitive & Behavioral Psychology and Spanish. Before working at RATI, Leila completed an internship primarily serving as a Spanish interpreter at nonprofits in Wisconsin, including a local Warming Center.

“One of the most important concepts this work has affirmed is that in a world so full of hate and blatant disregard for the suffering of the systemically oppressed, compassion is indeed radical. This does not mean that ‘The Good’ does not exist, but it does imply that to choose to invest in it is to be a believer. Seeing the smaller-scale impact at the level of nonprofit organizations like RATI fosters the courage to believe in change,” Leila said about why this work is important to her.

Come listen to Leila and our other panelists on Saturday, April 4th hosted at Ore Dock Brewing Co.! Doors open at 6.
