Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail Club

Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail Club The Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway is a hiking trail that links Grand Monadnock with Mount Sunapee in southwestern New Hampshire.

It is nearly 50 miles in length, winding along the Monadnock Highlands that divide the Connecticut and Merrimack River drainages. The original Monadnock-Sunapee Trail was laid out in 1921 by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, New Hampshire's oldest and largest conservation organization. The trail runs through three NH state parks, and now over 80 private land owners voluntair

ily agree to host the trail, and in some cases, campsites on their land. Through cooperation with theses folks, a good hiking route has been established

The Greenway is ideal for novice hikers, the family enjoying the weekend on the trail, or for experienced hikers wanting to power their way through the rolling to moderate terrain that the Greenway offers. A few favorite day hikes on the Greenway are climbing Mt. Monadnock, hiking through the Andorra forest at Pitcher Mt. or moose watching in and around Pillsbury State Park. For those interested in hiking the entire 49 miles in one shot, you'll find 5 campsites along the way and should plan on the trip taking 3-4 days. There's a little of everything on the Greenway - Hope to see you on the trail.

Just a quick addendum to the last message about muddy trails. As we said, Spring is in the air, and the trail is slowly thawing out. Still, plenty of snow and ice in spots on the trail, especially on the northern facing slopes. If you’re out hiking the Greenway bring micro spikes, you’ll be needing them. Also help us out by flicking sticks, throwing branches off the trail, and letting us know where the blowdowns are, be very specific on the location please.

Well that was a snowy winter to remember! But Spring is here and this is our annual reminder to please stay off the trail until things dry out. There’s still patches of snow in the woods and at some of the higher elevations and the trail is going to be soft for a little while. At the very least, tread lightly and don’t go around mud and puddles. Go through them! This prevents the trail from getting wider. Our volunteer trail crew has plenty to do and we appreciate that you’ll help keep the trail in good shape.

Posting this for someone looking for help with a lost item:

Hi there, a friend of mine was hiking south yesterday and left his stove kit in the southern Lovewell parking area. I was wondering if someone could create a post asking if anyone happened to find it? Not sure where to ask and I can’t create a post in the group. Thank you, if you do.

This just in. Maps? Who needs them? Well, we all do! But here’s what one fan of the trail did to shave a few ounces of map weight from his pack. And no this is not AI generated.

Don’t forget the previous message above regarding the water holes.

For those of you venturing out to explore the trail, especially through hikers, please be aware that the water sources are pretty much dry right now and there’s no real rain in sight for a bit. Consider stashing water and plan accordingly.

Also note that several of the trail maintenance volunteers put in a herculean effort to brush out several long stretches of the trail north of Pillsbury State Park today. They hope it might be a five-year haircut, or at least a decent annual one. Hats off to all involved!

The Greenway Trail was hit with an ice storm on Saturday 3/29. It looks like from Nelson Center north could be impacted, especially at higher elevations. We’re not sure the extent of the damage yet. If you’re out hiking the trail and come across blowdowns and such, please let us know in detail the location so our trails crews can handle the situation. And you can help us out by flicking sticks and debris off the treadway that would be great.

Also please be aware of how hiking can damage the trail when there are muddy conditions in the spring.

It’s a real wintry scene on the trail these days. Lots of snow and more coming. Be sure to be prepared for the conditions even if you’re only out for a few hours.
Meanwhile the trail crew volunteers are planning ahead for the spring clean-up. Let us know if you find any problems on the trail or let us know what your adventures have been. One trail gnome has been busy working on a new sign that will go up soon.

If you’re traveling on the trail and headed north from Lovewell Mt. you’ll come across this fine new bridge replacing and old log bridge. Thanks to the volunteers that serve as the trail crew, your feet can stay dry!

Also, remember that hunting season is upon us. Stay visible and aware of your surroundings.

Homesteads Along the Trail The Monadnock to Sunapee Greenway Trail was established in 1921. However, this corridor was established decades before by our early settlers. The MSGTC has been working to identify many of the homesteads and points of historical interest that can be seen along the trail. ....

The Greenway Trail has been swept as of May 5th. Reports are the trail is in really good shape, so get out and enjoy.

FYI- It took dozens of volunteers and hundreds of volunteer hours over the past few weeks to accomplish this task. Many thanks go out to those folks-
