Unsure about the s*x of the kittens you are taking care of? Perhaps this will help.

Female Kittens

• Shape: The ge***al opening looks like a vertical slit, a line, or a teardrop shape.
• Distance: The a**s and the vaginal opening are very close together (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch apart).
• Fur: There is very little fur or space between the a**s and the opening.
• Color Clue: If the kitten is tricolor, calico, or tortoiseshell, it is almost always female.

Male Kittens

• Shape: The pe**le opening or prepuce looks like a small circle or a round dot, often with a mound of fur and a slightly darker center.
• Distance: The space between the a**s and the p***s is much wider (about 1/2 inch to nearly an inch apart).
• Fur: There is a noticeable patch of extra fur and tissue in the middle where the testicles will eventually form.
• Testicles: Testicles are tiny and usually not plainly visible or easily felt until the kitten is around 6 to 10 weeks of age (or older).

Nursery Update & Urgent Request for Shares! 🚨🐾

We currently have sweet kittens ready for adoption, but a major dip in local interest has us at a standstill. When adoptions stall, it means we completely lose the ability to bring new kittens into our care.

If we don't see local interest pick up by the end of October, we will have to start contacting outside rescues to pull our current kittens so they can find homes.

When a community comes together, it really is a beautiful thing. ❤️🐾

A Good Samaritan recently took in dumped puppies found at a local restaurant in Pocahontas County, providing a safe haven for them until they could no longer manage. That is when a long-standing HSPC volunteer stepped up and reached out to us so we could partner together to help these babies.

We are so grateful to our wonderful Vet partner, who jumped right in to examine everyone and ensure they were healthy and cleared for safe transport.

Thanks to this incredible team effort, a rescue organization immediately opened its doors and secured loving foster homes for all remaining six puppies—giving them the true chance at a happy ending they deserve! ✨

A massive, heartfelt thank you to Hope, the McNaulls, Frankford Veterinary Hospital and Homeward Trails Animal Rescue for your compassion, quick action, and dedication to saving these lives.

Together, we make a difference! 🐶🙏

Wonderful

This barred owl’s story is a reminder of how much quiet heroism happens in our community every day.

He was found sitting in the middle of the road — dazed, injured, and unable to fly. A kind DNR agent drove him all the way from Wyoming County so he could get the care he needed. When he arrived, he had a concussion, a damaged beak, and a droopy left eye from the impact.

We stabilized him, treated his injuries, and made sure he was safe and comfortable before transferring him to our partners at Three Rivers Avian Center https://tracwv.org/ for specialized rehabilitation.

And the best part?
They report that he’s recovering well. 🦉💙

Wildlife medicine is a team effort — from the person who stops to help, to the DNR agent who transports, to the rehab experts who continue the work. We’re grateful to be part of that circle of care.

Nursery closing in November

Any interest in our 5 kittens out there? 🙏🏼💙🩷

They leave our Nursery;
Spayed/neutered, microchipped,
SNAP test negative, dewormer,
Flea/Tick treatment,
Combo vaccine given(booster given if they are in our care 3 to 4 weeks after the initial combo vaccine)
and rabies vaccination given if they are three months old in our care.

This first year male peregrine was found on Rt 219 near Frankford in Greenbrier county. He has 2 broken metacarpals. After intake, treatment and meds he was given a quail almost as big as he is to enjoy. He sure did! By the next morning all that was left of the quail was just a couple of feathers and a cleaned off bone! He is a spunky little guy and should do well once he is healed up.
