Bikepacking Roots

Bikepacking Roots Bikepacking Roots is dedicated to the support and advancement of bikepacking and the conservation of the landscapes through which we ride.

Our Goals:

Create high-quality, enjoyable, accessible bikepacking routes and route networks in geographic regions throughout North America. These routes, some with a trail emphasis and some with a dirt road emphasis, will include options for multiple distances (100-2000+ miles), will be well mapped, and relevant trip-planning information will be readily available for no cost in digital formats th

at can be easily printed. Provide and promote visibility and access for the bikepacking community. Bikepackers needs to gain greater recognition from land management agencies as a legitimate user group, particularly in the context of access and policy decisions. Local land managers and municipalities will be informed of these routes and their potential to attract new users and tourism income. Foster strong connections between bikepackers and landscapes to promote landscape conservation and encourage responsible backcountry ethics. As bikepacking routes traverse large swaths of landscape, bikepackers benefit from large-landscape conservation efforts, and more needs to be done to encourage such a conservation ethos, especially in the mountain bike community where many individuals seem to equate “conservation” with “Wilderness,” places where bikes are banned. Bikepacking Roots will aid in bikepackers’ connections to landscape through broadening their understanding of the natural history of a region, becoming informed of conservation challenges in the region, and sharing how the individual bikepacker can help.

Next up among our new Board Members is Doug Tolman from Salt Lake City, Utah!

Doug (he/him) is a passionate public land advocate who spends most of his time in the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau, working in a policy role at a small-but-mighty conservation non-profit.

Bikepacking since 2018, he values the place-learning aspect of multi-day trips as a way to connect with land and rural communities and sees bikepacking as one of the best tools for building a community of advocates for conservation and dispersed recreation access.

We are excited to have Doug joining our growing org and supporting our advocacy efforts and more!

🎉 2026 BIPOC Adventure Grant Recipient spotlight: WTFNB El Paso🎉

WTFNB El Paso (.sin.fronteras) is a community-led bikepacking and cycling collective rooted in the El Paso-Juárez borderlands, centering women, trans, femme, nonbinary, and BIPOC riders. They create safer, affirming spaces for first-generation cyclists and first-time campers to build skills, confidence, and connection to land. Through workshops, practice rides, mentorship, and supported trips, the group makes bikepacking more accessible and community-centered. In partnership with Bici Sin Fronteras and Critical Mass El Paso, they are building binational solidarity through a women’s bikepacking initiative on both sides of the border and a shared gear library to reduce barriers to outdoor access.

🚨New Community Route Alert 🚨

Matt Mason, creator of the popular Monumental Loop and Rollin & Tumblin bikepacking routes has created a new route in Southern New Mexico called Wayfaring Stranger.

Wayfaring Stranger utilizes quiet gravel roads providing access to a sparsely populated region with expansive views, solitude, archaeological sites, and a large intact Chihuahuan Desert grassland on Otero Mesa.

This route was born out of a collaboration with the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance. As part of their work to protect vulnerable and cherished landscapes across NM, they’ve been leading a process to secure protection for the fragile and unique grasslands on Otero Mesa. They reached out to Matt to create a bikepacking route to raise awareness for the Mesa and the surrounding mountains. Wayfaring Stranger is a route born of our mutual desire to see Otero Mesa receive long term legal protection.

Visitors will see a variety of wildlife, archaeological sites, and experience a quiet remote area that feels a bit like traveling back in time. Night skies are extremely dark with only the faint glow of El Paso off to the west.

Don’t let the relatively smooth roads and lack of climbing lull you into a false sense of security! Wayfaring Stranger presents challenges via potential strong winds, lack of water and services, and extreme solitude.

With elevations ranging from 3,500 to nearly 7,000 feet, this route is best ridden during the shoulder seasons, with late September through November and March through April being ideal.
