Vermont Museum of Natural History

Vermont Museum of Natural History Welcome to the Vermont Museum of Natural History and Pool Nature Center! The museum sees close to 7000 visitors annually.

The SVNHM houses one of the largest collections of native bird and mammal mounts in the northeast. We also have interactive and live animal exhibits including birds of prey, reptiles and amphibians, native trout and salmon and exotic insects and spiders. Our outreach programs reach thousands of people each year. We strive to continuously grow and improve all of our program offerings.

Preparations for the Summer Nature Camp at the Pool Nature Center are well underway! We’re stocking up on popsicles, scouting out the trails and holding camp councilor trainings.

There are still some spots available for both camp sessions!

July 20-24 we’ll be hosting our Wildlife Champions,
rising 5th and 6th grades, while August 3-7 will be the turn of our Animal Adventurers, rising 3rd and 4th grade. This is an all day camp, 9AM-3PM, with lunch provided. $100 per week for residents of WSWSU District & Marlboro, VT, and $200 per week for non-residents.

For more information about our camp, or to register, please check out our website: https://www.vermontmuseum.org/summer-camp

Thanks to the generosity of the Marlboro Alliance, camp scholarships are available to residents of Marlboro Vermont! Please contact Gail Chain at [email protected] for more information or to request scholarship funds.

We were so thrilled that Mert could join the North Branch Nature Center for their Biodiversity Jamboree!

If you’d like to meet Mert the bitey turtle, stop by the Pool Nature Center! We’re open Thursdays-Sundays, 10AM until 3PM

It's International Turtle Week! Meet Mert the Turt, the famous former resident of North Branch Nature Center. Here's a picture of him having a shell of a time at our Biodiversity Jamboree. In fact, he had such a great time that, by the end, he was "barely even biting anyone."

If you see any of Vermont's native turtles in the wild, please leave them be! Many of these species do not reproduce until they are at least 10 years of age, and the loss of even a few mature females can have serious consequences on their populations. More information on Vermont's native turtles can be found on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department website!

The Vermont Museum of Natural History is seeking volunteers to assist with animal care! Help with daily feedings, cleanings, enrichment and occasional larger projects. No animal handling experience necessary.

Not interested in animal care, but want to volunteer? There are many ways to be involved, such as gardening, trail work, carpentry, education and much more!

Interested, have questions or just vaguely curious? Join us at the Pool Nature Center this Saturday, June 20 at 10:30 to learn what it’s like to Volunteer with the Vermont Museum of Natural History!

June 15th is Nature Photography Day, a day to get outside and celebrate the beauty of nature through photography. And in Vermont, the natural world is often right beyond our doorways! Forests, wildlife, streams, birds, wetlands, even the chipmunk on your yard, we are lucky to be so surrounded by the natural world. So grab a camera (or your phone) and take some time today to explore the magnificent outdoors.

Have you taken a photo of the natural world that you’d like to share? We’d love to see it!

We are excited to welcome our new onsite summer educator to the Pool Nature Center!

Reily started volunteering at the Vermont Museum of Natural History in Jan, 2026, as part of our education docent program. Growing up at a small nature center in central NY, she was imprinted on environmental interpretation and conservation from a young age. She assisted with programs and guided walks until relocating to VT in 2015 following college. She graduated from Marlboro College in 2015, with a degree in Medieval History and Film, and has since continued teaching as well as performing around New England, where she heard the siren's call drawing her back into the world of environmental education.

Stop by the Pool Nature Center this summer to meet Reily, where she’ll be running open hours along with guided hikes, interpretive programs, meet and greets with our animal ambassadors, as well as hands on educational activities for the whole family.

The Pool Nature Center is open this summer Thursdays-Sundays, 10AM-3PM.
