AWG's March river monitoring was successfully completed thanks to 15 amazing volunteers! An interesting observation looking at this March 2026 data compared to prior March data: Most of the ambient water quality parameters reflected values closer to those typically observed during June monitoring. For instance, the March 2026 electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) measurements were much lower than they typically are in March and were similar to the numbers recorded in June. This makes sense because we are experiencing an earlier snow melt than usual—often times the snowpack is still holding up during our March river monitoring. After receiving a nice amount of snow, we had rain and high temperatures that caused it all to quickly melt. Snow runoff and additional rain can lead to a dilution effect of the stream water because both snow and rain contain very low amounts of dissolved ions (minerals and salt), therefore the concentration of dissolved ions in the stream water is diluted which results in decreased electrical conductivity and TDS.

Turbidity measurements were higher than they usually are in March and were closer to the values observed in June of prior years. This also makes sense because runoff from the early snow melt, and additional precipitation, can increase the amount of sediment that is washed into water bodies which increases turbidity.
