2026 marks our fifth year partnering with Mercy Cedar Rapids to introduce local high school students to the many career paths within a hospital, both the well-known roles and the behind-the-scenes professions students may not realize exist.

We had the opportunity to bring a fantastic group of students from Marion Independent School District High School to tour Mercy, learn directly from healthcare professionals, and explore the range of departments that keep a hospital running every day.

This group was one of the most engaged we’ve seen, curious, thoughtful, and eager to get their foot in the door. Even better, these tours can lead to real opportunities, with students stepping into part-time roles such as patient care techs, transporters, and more.

One of the highlights of the day was visiting Mercy’s simulation lab, where students saw firsthand how advanced training prepares medical teams for real-life situations, even with a lifelike patient who can respond to different scenarios.

Big thanks to Mercy’s team for investing in the next generation and giving students an inside look at what a future in healthcare can truly be.

Engaging students in the world around them is how we build a stronger workforce and keep our best talent right here at home. We hope you choose to stick around.

8:30 P.M. UPDATE:
The intersection of Highway 13/151 is now open to traffic in all directions. The traffic signals are operating as they should.

‼️HEADS UP‼️
Emergency repairs will begin soon on the traffic signal mast arm at the intersection of Highways 13 and 151. An oversized vehicle made contact with the mast arm of the eastbound traffic signals on Monday and upon further inspection, the pole was compromised and needs to be replaced.

Detours will be posted while the mast arm is removed and temporary signals are installed. The lights at Highway 13/151 and Highway 13/Linn Aire Avenue will operate in flashing red mode as work takes place.

Northbound traffic on Highway 13 and eastbound traffic on Highway 151 will be diverted east on Linn Aire Avenue to 62nd Street, then north to reconnect with Highway 151.

Officers will be assisting with traffic control. Drivers should expect delays and are asked to use patience or find an alternate route as this emergency repair will impact the evening commute.

This week has been a great reminder of what makes this project so special: local professionals and students learning side-by-side, building skills, confidence, and a stronger community.

ESCO Electric has been an incredible partner on this home. Yesterday, Trevor Gamerdinger was on site helping students work through their electrical rough-in. What makes Trevor’s involvement especially meaningful? He once sat in the very same high school class these students are in now. Today he’s a full-time electrician giving back, mentoring the next generation. (Stay tuned, we hope to share Trevor’s full story soon!)

ESCO continued the momentum today, guiding students as they installed electrical boxes that will eventually house outlets and switches throughout the home.

At the same time, Fosters Kraus Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning was busy on the lower level working through plumbing installation. Things are coming together, we even spotted a new tub ready to be set - a big milestone for the space!

Every day, this project moves forward thanks to partners who step in, students who show up ready to learn, and a community that believes in investing in both people and place. 🏠💙
