Before the workday began, before inboxes filled and responsibilities pulled everyone in different directions, a group of local business owners, creators, city leaders, and dream-chasing entrepreneurs were invited to gather around warm coffee and pastries at Lola’s at the Inn. It wasn’t a formal workshop. No keynote speaker. No pressure to pitch.

It was simply the latest session of Business Talk, an ongoing monthly series hosted and sponsored by the City of Marion—but intentionally designed to welcome all entrepreneurs from across Grant County, no matter where they live or operate.

Just people sitting together—talking honestly about their work, their challenges, their hopes, and their community.

And for a few hours, something important and powerful emerged: connection.

The 9th objective of our Strategic Vision Plan is to support blight remediation and redevelopment. If left unchecked, blight can decrease land value across neighborhoods, raise crime rates, and negatively affect infrastructure. Our efforts include building new housing on existing infrastructure at low cost, as well as restoring and preserving historic buildings. We do this by involving the creativity and commitment of local citizens in reimagining their neighborhoods and structures.

Indiana Wesleyan University and the broader Marion area are experiencing several notable developments that highlight both commercial growth and institutional planning. One of the most visible new additions is the Dutch Bros Coffee location under construction on the south side of Marion. The project signals continued commercial investment in the area and adds a new dining and beverage option that is likely to attract both students and residents. In parallel, a new communications tower is being built to strengthen and expand cellular coverage across the region—an improvement expected to benefit residents, businesses, emergency responders, and campus communities. IWU itself is actively engaged in creating a new campus master plan, a forward-looking blueprint that will shape future academic, residential, and campus-life development. This planning effort is essential for aligning the university’s long-term goals with the needs of its students and academic programs. Finally, additional progress is being reported on the former Tucker Career Center facility. Collectively, these updates reflect a phase of steady growth and improvement throughout the Marion area.

Taylor University is continuing an ambitious phase of campus growth and transformation, reflecting its commitment to improving student life, expanding academic offerings, and enhancing community connections. One of the most visible developments is the construction of a new residence hall, which will create additional on-campus living space and help accommodate enrollment needs. Alongside this, the university is developing a new General Wellness Center designed to support physical and mental well-being, providing students with updated resources and modern facilities. Taylor is also investing heavily in its hospitality and culinary programs, which are undergoing a multi-year expansion aimed at strengthening hands-on training, industry partnerships, and academic pathways within these fields. After two years of construction delays and rerouted traffic patterns, the long-awaited reopening of the bridge and Main Street near campus is finally on the horizon, promising improved accessibility for students, residents, and visitors. Another significant project in the pipeline is a large hotel currently in the design phase, developed in partnership with the Marion Land Trust. This hotel would not only serve university guests but also contribute to regional tourism and economic development. Together, these initiatives demonstrate Taylor University’s ongoing dedication to growth, modernization, and meaningful community engagement.

Senate Enrolled Act 1 (SB1) was discussed at our board meeting and our last LEO as a major policy shift with far-reaching implications for local governments throughout the state. Its fiscal changes are expected to influence municipal budgets, funding streams, and operational planning for years to come. One of the most surprising statewide reactions to SB1 involved Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library: the governor’s office reportedly did not initially realize that the legislative changes would eliminate the state’s portion of funding for the program. Public response was swift, and the resulting pressure has already prompted discussions about revisiting or revising aspects of the bill. Local officials encouraged community members to review the year-by-year impact analysis prepared by economist Larry DeBoer, a trusted source for understanding tax policy and municipal finance. His breakdown provides needed clarity on how SB1 will shift financial conditions over time. As updates to the legislation are anticipated, community leaders emphasized the importance of staying informed, understanding the long-term implications, and monitoring any changes that might restore or adjust funding mechanisms that nonprofits and local governments have historically relied upon.
