In Germany, the price on the tag is the price you pay. The tax is already in it.

Nineteen percent, folded into every number you see. A loaf marked at three euro costs three euro. A coat marked at ninety costs ninety. You can stand at the register with the exact coins counted out in your hand, and you will be right.

It is one of the first things Americans notice, and it takes a few days to stop flinching at the till, waiting for the number to jump. It never does.

The tax is still there, of course. Germans pay plenty of it. They have simply decided that a price should mean what it says.

Think about your last receipt. The number on the shelf, and then the number you actually paid.

How much did yours add on?

Oktoberfest is coming, so this week we’re bringing the party menu home. Think pretzels, hearty German favorites, and a table that feels festive without making the day too complicated. More tomorrow.

Germans paid a record price for gasoline this week. Around 2.21 euro a litre, which works out to about nine dollars and sixty five cents a gallon.

That is a new all-time high. The old record was set in the spring of 2022, and this week passed it, pushed up by oil prices and by a Rhine running so low that shipping fuel along it has become expensive.

And here is the thing. They filled up anyway. They grumbled, they checked prices on their phones, they drove across the border if they lived near one. And then they filled the tank and went to work.

Germans have paid European prices for fuel their entire lives, which is a large part of why German cars are small, German trains are full, and German towns are built for walking.

Nine sixty five a gallon.

What did your last tank cost?

A German house has no closets. Not one.

Not in the bedroom, not in the hall, not under the stairs. The walls are the walls. If you want somewhere to hang your coats you buy a wardrobe, you carry it home in flat boxes, you build it yourself, and it stands against the wall like a piece of furniture, because it is one.

And when you move house, it comes with you. So does the kitchen, in many cases, but that is a story for another day.

This surprises Americans more than almost anything else, because a closet is simply part of a room back home. Nobody counts them. In Germany you count wardrobes instead, and a good one is bought once, kept for forty years, and handed down.

Count the closets in your house right now. A German family would have bought every one of them.

How many do you have?

This isn’t your American-style deep pie—German apple pie ( also known as Gedeckter Apfelkuchen) is flatter and not as sweet. 🍎 It’s one of those "everyday cakes" I make on repeat. Recipe is in the comments!

German baked apples are not the plain kind. Stuff them with marzipan, almonds, and warm spices, and you get something closer to a dessert than a snack. The smell alone is basically synonymous with Advent in Germany.
