Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable. 🚒🔥

This Tuesday our SCBA familiarization training wasn’t just about knowing how to operate your air pack—it’s about getting comfortable wearing it, moving in it, and working in it.

Firefighters practiced navigating tight spaces, working around obstacles, and operating their SCBA in situations where movement can be difficult or entanglement is possible. We also practice in low or reduced visibility situations.

The more familiar we are with our equipment, the less we have to think about it when things get difficult. Practice builds confidence, and confidence matters when you’re working in tight, dark, smoky, or unforgiving spaces.

Train hard. Know your gear. Be ready.

Apparatus Spotlight (And Special Thank You!): Old Engine 9 “The Ward” A Piece of Marion History 🚒

Our 1936 Ward LaFrance is more than an antique fire truck—it’s nearly 90 years of Marion Fire Department history on four wheels. Bought new by Marion and never once leaving our department this is truly something we cherish.

Built by Ward LaFrance in Elmira Heights, NY, this engine reflects the craftsmanship and ingenuity of a golden age in American fire apparatus manufacturing.

Recently, its engine water pump needed major attention. When the original water pump housing and shaft could no longer be repaired Jeff Mander stepped in to help bring the The Ward back to life. With assistance from Hadley's Fab-Weld,Inc, a replacement housing and shaft were fabricated to fit and function with this nearly nine-decade-old apparatus.

We’re grateful to Jeff Mander and Hadley’s Fab Weld for helping preserve this important piece of Marion history.

The goal isn’t just to display an old fire truck—it’s to keep the history working.

Nearly 90 years old—and still worth saving. ❤️‍🔥🚒

🚒 Apparatus Spotlight: Engine 9

We took a break from these, but we are back with ENGINE 9!

Meet Engine 9, our 2012 Pierce Arrow XT and the Workhorse of the Marion Fire Department fleet.

Engine 9 carries 1,000 gallons of water and a 1,500 GPM pump, with seating for 1 Operator, 1 officer and 4 firefighters. It’s equipped for both fire suppression and vehicle rescue, including:

🔥 1,500 feet of 5-inch supply line
💪 Battery-over-hydraulic combination rescue tool
🚿 Remote deck gun and deployable Blitzfire master stream
💡 Remote light tower
💧 Front-mounted hard suction for rural water supply operations

Engine 9 serves as a first-out apparatus for mutual aid and a second-out engine for fires and rescues—built to bring a lot of capability wherever the call takes us.

When the tones drop, Engine 9 is ready. 🚨

It’s a family thing. 🚒

Volunteering with the fire department isn’t always something you do alone (although we welcome new or solo volunteers!). For many of our members, it’s a family affair. And we wanted to take a moment to celebrate that!

You’ll find spouses, kids, parents, grandparents, and other family members volunteering right alongside us—or hanging out at the hall, lending a hand, sharing a meal, and being part of the crew.

It takes more than firefighters to build a strong volunteer department. It takes families who support the call, too.

We’re proud to be more than a fire department. We are a firehouse family. Of course, that doesn’t mean we aren’t looking for new members, we are always looking to welcome new people (and families)!

So about that Cascade System we mentioned on Tuesday!

How do we fit 45 minutes of breathing air into a tank small enough to wear on your back? 🤔 Well, we have a new tool just for that!

The answer is pressure. Our SCBA bottles are filled to 4,500 PSI, giving firefighters up to 45 minutes of air under ideal conditions.

To fill them safely and efficiently, we use a cascade fill system. Multiple high-pressure storage cylinders are used to top off each bottle. By filling from the lowest-pressure storage cylinder first and working our way up, we maximize every cubic foot of compressed air while ensuring each SCBA bottle leaves full and ready for the next call.

In the past Marion Fire Department had a truck mounted cascade system, on our previous Rescue 41, when we retired that truck we needed a new one. The county provides a cascade (and fills ours when it runs out) but needing to call the county for every training or small call is hardly practical!

If you’re not quite up to house fires and auto rescue, but still are curious about joining, running the cascade is one of a myriad tasks you could help with! We need support personnel and we can teach you what to do!

Happy 200th Birthday, Marion! 🎉

Congratulations to our town on reaching this incredible milestone. Here’s to celebrating our rich history, strong community, and bright future.

Thank you to the Marion Events Organization, the Marion Historic Association, and the Marion Bicentennial Committee for planning this wonderful celebration.

Tonight, we were honored to play a small part by providing three apparatus and 13 members to stand by during the fireworks display. Standbys like this help ensure everyone can safely enjoy events like these, and we at the Marion Fire Department are proud to continue serving this amazing community.

Here’s to the next 200 years, Marion! 🚒❤️

💦If sprinkler, why Firetruck Shaped?! 💦

Several of our members—and their families—spent time at the Marion Town Park helping make a community event a little more memorable. We brought Engine 9 and TA18 so local kids (and a few adults!) could climb aboard, ask questions, and cool off in what we still believe is the world’s coolest sprinkler. All in conjunction with a family event set up by Marion’s Community Schools Program. We had a blast , and from all the happy voices it sounds like the kids did too!

Events like this are about giving back, but they’re also a great opportunity to build skills. In a relaxed environment, our drivers get valuable experience operating apparatus, running pumps, deploying different hose lines, and even working with a tanker. Every hour spent running the apparatus helps build confidence for the moments when the stakes are much higher.

At the end of the day, serving our community isn’t just about answering emergency calls—it’s about being part of the community during the good and the bad and yesterday was pretty darn good!

And really… who doesn’t love running through a giant sprinkler on a summer day? 🚒

🚒 Fires don’t always burn by the road, it’s a good thing we can go the distance!

Last night, 18 Marion Fire Department members—new recruits and seasoned firefighters alike—put one of our most unique tools to work: the Phantom Pumper.

The evolution began with Engine 9 securing the hydrant while BR69 stretched a long 5-inch supply line to position the Phantom Pumper where an engine couldn’t reach. From there, crews supplied multiple handlines and our brush truck, proving that when the apparatus stops, the water keeps moving.

Every member had a role—from water supply to attack lines, communication to coordination—and every role mattered. Training like this prepares us for the calls where access is limited, but the mission stays the same.

After the training we even had a chance to break in our new cascade system, that’s a pretty cool device we will do a post on soon!

We are glad to hear that the fellow firefighter who who was hurt while working an emergency scene in East Williamson is home and recovering, our thoughts remain with them as they recover.

We want to share this with our followers, if you see emergency vehicles, or someone out conducting traffic control, SLOW DOWN and pay attention, we depend on your attentiveness for our safety.

Please keep your head up and watch out, fire fighters are always happy to serve our communities but need your help to do it safely.

💪 Teamwork Makes the Dream Work! 🚒

Great training nights don’t happen because of one firefighter—they happen because everyone works together.

This week our crews practiced relay pumping, with operators coordinating use of our new Rescue 41 (R41) and its onboard 2000 GPM pump to supply Engine 54, just like we might on an incident where a hydrant isn’t close by. Relay pumping lets us ensure we have enough water over long distances to put out any fire.

While pump operators focused on maintaining a reliable water supply, firefighters worked together flowing a variety of master streams and hand lines, communicating and coordinating every move.

Every firefighter has a job, and every job matters. From the pump panel to the nozzle, to the people who help with administration at the hall! Success depends on teamwork, communication, and trust.
