Where’s the water?!

Marion has a great network of hydrants, but they aren’t everywhere. Last night, members trained on three ways we can get water without a hydrant:

Drafting with an engine — using special hose called hard suction attached to a pump intake to draw water from a pond, stream, or lake.

Drafting with our brush truck — a useful method when fighting fires far from the road.

Using our portable pump — a small floating gas-powered pump that can be deployed on almost any body of water to supply firefighting operations.

These aren’t methods we use often, but as a fire department serving a rural community, they are essential skills to maintain.

If you’d like to learn more or see how you can help, send us a message here or stop by the hall on Tuesdays around 7 PM. We’d be happy to talk!

Last evening (4-27-2026) we had the pleasure to train with Fairville Fire Department, along with Newark and Sodus Center in tanker shuttle operations. Our members practiced moving water using TA18 along side of Fairville TA15 and Sodus Center TA26 while Newark and Fairville practiced drafting from a portable pond and fill site operations. Thanks for the invite! We always enjoy training with our neighboring departments.

If you are interested in learning more about what our organization does or if you are interested in joining our organization we encourage you to contact us through messenger or stop into the fire hall any Tuesday around 7pm, we are always looking for new motivated individuals to join our team.

Last night our members sharpened their skills during an auto extrication training. Crews practiced vehicle stabilization, tool deployment, and patient access in realistic scenarios to stay ready for when seconds matter most.

This training gave us a chance to break in our new Rescue truck and practice with our new battery rescue tools while also refining skills with some of our older tools including rescue jacks, cribbing and our heavy duty winch.

Great work by everyone involved—training hard to serve our community better every day.

If you are looking for a way to give back to our community, learn new skills, and a chance to do something interesting (like cutting up cars or putting out fires), come on down the Marion Fire Department any Tuesday around 7pm or send us a message here asking about membership!

Whew… it took us a few days to catch up, but it wouldn’t be Christmas without our post-parade thank-you!

First, thank you to our members — some of whom had been up since 2 a.m. responding to a car crash and a structure fire — who still came out to block roads, decorate trucks, and put in the work to keep the parade rolling. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.

Thank you to the Marion School Band, Marion Community Schools, Jennie’s House, Lollipops & Polka Dots, Casa Mexicana, and Stonehenge Coffee. It was wonderful to see the town so lively before the parade even began!

A special thank you to our judges who braved the cold:
• Summer Johnson – Town Supervisor
• Michelle Kuelling – Marion Board of Education
• Andrew Meyer – Second Assistant Chief, Marion Fire Department

Next, thank you to all the businesses, nonprofits, and emergency response agencies who participated. We had over 47 vehicles in this year’s parade — a new record! Several stood out and will be receiving award plaques and $50 prizes:

🏆 Best Appearing Emergency Response Agency:
• East Palmyra Fire Department
• Honorable Mention: Newark Fire Department (antique truck)

🏆 Best Appearing Business:
• Williams Cattle — impressive decorations and numbers! With four entries, they were the most represented group outside of the Marion Fire Department.
• Honorable Mention: Marion Events Organization and their Buffalo Bills fans for their energy and decorations

🏆 Best Appearing Nonprofit:
• Bucks and Does 4-H

🎄 Furthest Traveled (besides Santa, who flew ~3,000 miles from the North Pole):
• York Fire Department, traveling 53 miles to join us

Now, to recognize ALL of our participants (in no particular order):

• Alton Fire Department
• Van Leer
• Fetherly’s Garage (2 entries!)
• Western Wayne Ambulance (2 entries!)
• Wayne County EMS (2 entries!)
• Palmyra Fire Department
• Fairville Fire Department
• Walworth Fire Department
• Faith Fellowship Church
• Nutrien (2 entries — we loved the sprayer!)
• York Fire Department
• Knucklehead Farms
• Marion Central School District Transportation
• Macedon Center Fire Department
• Williams Cattle (all 4 vehicles!)
• Williamson Fire Department
• Welsty Manyard
• Marion Highway Department
• West Walworth Fire Department
• Marion Events Organization (MEO)
• Bovet Landscaping
• East Palmyra Fire Department (3 entries!)
• Pioneer Gas Engine (3 entries)
• Newark Fire Department
• South Macedon Fire Department (3 entries!)
• Hadley’s Fab Weld
• Lollipops & Polka Dots
• Bucks and Does 4-H (thank you for giving Santa a lift!)
• Marion Fire Department (Engine 54, Rescue 41, Brush 69, Tanker 18, and 10-1)

Finally, thank you to everyone who came out to watch. This event would be nothing without the turnout and crowds. If you have videos or photos from your favorite moments, please share them below!

With all the thank-yous and awards wrapped up, the Marion Fire Department would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all the joys of the holiday season! 🎄🚒
