HerStory Spotlight: Edna S. Dutton

For more than four decades, Miss Edna S. Dutton helped tell the story of Marion through her work at The Marion Star. Beginning her career as a proofreader in 1914, she later became the paper’s society editor, chronicling the people, events, and civic life that shaped the community until her retirement in 1957.

Before her journalism career, Miss Dutton taught at the intermediate school in Agosta, Ohio. One of her classes, on the right shows her classroom in 1914 with Miss Dutton on the far right, looking unsatisfied with the class! Her lifelong dedication to education, communication, and community service would become hallmarks of her career.

Beyond journalism, Miss Dutton was deeply involved in Marion’s civic and cultural organizations. She served with the American Red Cross, worked with the Salvation Army, supported the Marion Community Foundation, and participated in numerous women’s, literary, and musical clubs within the Marion Women's Club, including the Business Women's Club (Edna in the photo to the left with other business women's club members).

Through both her reporting and her service, Miss Dutton helped document Marion’s history while actively shaping it, ensuring the stories of the community would be remembered for generations.

Do you remember Miss Dutton or her articles?

HerStory of global learning: In the early 20th century, women’s clubs in Ohio recognized that education could build bridges far beyond their own communities. Through scholarship programs and international partnerships, they supported women pursuing higher education and leadership opportunities at a time when those paths were often limited.

One scholarship recipient, Ophelia (or Ofelia) Mendoza of Honduras, studied advanced methods of education at The Ohio State University before returning home to become a doctor in philosophy and political economy, educator, and advocate for women’s advancement and social reform. She later reflected that she hoped “to do what she can with what she has learned among people who are eager to progress.” Her story reminds us how education can ripple across nations and generations.

The photograph featured includes international women leaders arriving for the opening of the Second Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, including Minerva Bernardino of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Ophelia Mendoza of Honduras, and Amalia C. de Castillo Ledón of Mexico.

This information was researched by Autumn Schafer, an Ohio State University of Marion Student, for her presentation on the History of the Pan-American Scholarship in her 2023 class, in collaboration with the Marion Women's Club archive collection.

Last night was AMAZING! We created "cyanotype" art using glass slides from our historic archives, adding our own pieces of history—jewelry, flowers, crochet collections, and more—to create beautiful works of art! We received lots of positive feedback from the 45 ladies in attendance who, together, MADE history! Thank you to Art Professor Kate Shannon, 2025-26 Ohio State University Artist Laureate, for bridging the past to the present through photographic art!

Another HerStory of conservation: Long before environmental education became common in schools, women’s clubs recognized the importance of helping children understand and appreciate the natural world.

In the 1920s, nature study was seen as a way to inspire curiosity, stewardship, and responsibility, which are values that continue to shape conversations around conservation and environmental awareness today.
