A new well doesn’t arrive quietly. ❤️

It arrives with singing. Clapping. Dancing. Laughter. And a whole lot of joy.

These celebrations are some of our favorite moments because they say more than we ever could in a caption. A community has worked together, a sustainable source of safe drinking water is now close to home, and there is every reason to celebrate.

Traditional brick-making involves mixing clay-rich soil with water, sometimes adding grass or straw to help prevent cracking. The mixture is pressed into wooden molds, shaped into bricks, and left to dry in the sun for days before they're ready for the next stage.

Now imagine doing that thousands of times!

A single MMM well requires approximately 4,000–5,000 bricks. The mold in this video makes just four at a time. That's at least 1,000–1,250 rounds of brick-making, assuming every brick turns out perfectly!

And here's what makes this so special: the villagers make these bricks themselves. It's part of the work they contribute toward building their own sustainable source of safe drinking water.

It's a remarkable amount of effort, and we're grateful for the dedication of our African partners who make these wells possible.

A number like 62,000 can be hard to picture.

But each one of those wells belongs to a community. Every one represents families who no longer have to wonder where their water will come from. Children can drink safely. Parents can care for their families. And a village has a source of water designed to serve them for years to come.

For more than three decades, God has brought together people in Africa and people here at home to make this possible. One village, one well and one act of love at a time.

Faith has never meant waiting until every piece is perfectly in place.

For Marion Medical Mission, sometimes it has meant saying yes to villages in need before every dollar for those wells was in hand—and trusting God to provide as we moved forward.

But stepping out in faith has always gone hand in hand with being responsible with what we’ve been given. From the beginning, MMM made a promise: 100% of designated gifts would go to their designated purpose, and 100% of undesignated gifts would go to the mission in Africa.

That promise still matters to us today.

We believe we are called to move our feet, love our neighbors and be faithful stewards along the way.

One team comes home, and another heads out into the field. That’s Well Season.
When Team 1 wrapped up its time in Africa, 1,029 wells had already been verified and installed. Now Team 2 has completed orientation, divided into 11 teams, and is out traveling the roads of Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.
There are long days ahead. Rough roads. Villages waiting. Wells to verify. New pumps to install. And plenty of celebrations when clean, safe water begins to flow.
Our goal this year is 4,420 new wells, and we still need help funding about 2,000 of them. Every gift helps keep this work moving from one village to the next.

Our volunteers go to help install wells, and come home grateful for far more than they expected.

The welcome. The friendships. The generosity of neighbors who have worked toward this day and now want to share their joy with everyone there.
