Sippican Lands Trust is pleased to announce the 2026 recipients of the Richard I. and Helen A. Arthur Scholarship. This award is given to high school senior(s) or student(s) in their first or second year of college who are Marion residents, with a preference towards students interested in the environment, conservation, or a related field of study.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Caroline Houdelette of Old Rochester Regional High School and Stella Ingle of Tabor Academy. Both students distinguished themselves through outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and a strong commitment to their communities. Their experiences, interests, and future goals reflect a deep dedication to the sciences and to advancing the wellbeing of those around them.

Caroline’s passion for healthcare and environmental health, along with her pursuit of a career in nursing, made her an exceptional candidate. Stella’s interest in supporting both human and
animal wellbeing, alongside her aspiration to pursue a career in animal medicine, also made her an exceptional candidate.

Sippican Lands Trust is proud to support these promising young scholars and is confident that their knowledge, compassion, and determination will lead to meaningful contributions in their respective fields. Congratulations, Caroline and Stella!

The scholarship is made available through the Sippican Lands Trust Scholarship Fund. This award was created and named after Richard I. “Dick” (1933-2018) and Helen Adams Arthur (1940-2008), who were beloved residents of Marion and long-time volunteers with the organization. Dick and Helen were deeply committed to preserving Marion’s beautiful open spaces.

Thank you to Justin Barrett from Nasketucket Bird club for leading our sound filled bird walk this morning. A long list of birds at Osprey Marsh, with some nice views of Downey Woodpecker, Osprey and hearing plenty of others like Wrens (house and Carolina) Yellow Warbler and Yellowthroats, Catbirds, Robin, Blue Jays, Orioles, Song Sparrow Red-winged Black Birds, Great Crested Flycatchers, Chickadees, Nuthatches, and those still able to hear higher pitches heard Cedar Waxwings.

Overall a great way to spend an hour or so in the beautiful, cool summer morning before the rain comes. See upcoming events on our webpages.

Enjoy a morning of bird watching with Nasketucket Bird Club President, Justin Barrett. Taking place at Osprey Marsh this will be a short walk on smooth flat trail and the meandering boardwalk. We will focus on the sounds (and a few sights) of spring birds.

Dress for the weather and bring your binoculars. We'll have a pair or two to share.

Registration at the events page of our website is requested.

Thanks to the large group that came on our “Long Walk” despite the threat of rain. We walked 5+ miles and back about 200 years to consider the life of Solomon Smith and his family who live way out of town in the early and mid 19th century. Solomon lived into his 90s and was listed as crew with his son on the Osceola in 1850 when he was in his 80s. Our annual meeting will include “Sweet Freedom” a film made by a Fairhaven director about the same period in our area. We heard plenty of spring birds and look forward to the upcoming walk on May 30th - see our newsletter of events page for more information.

Happy Birthday Sir David!

I know of no pleasure deeper than that which comes from contemplating the natural world and trying to understand it.
