Retired Trooper Larry J. O’Brien, age 81, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Larry graduated from the 83rd academy class on September 12, 1969, and retired January 31, 1996. He provided 28 years of dedicated service at the Canfield Patrol Post.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s 179th Academy Class recently graduated from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Training Academy after 28 weeks of intense training. Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol superintendent, and Director Benjamin B. Suver, Ohio Department of Public Safety, provided remarks during the graduation ceremony. Major General Matthew S. Woodruff, Adjutant General, delivered the commencement address to the 38 members of the Patrol’s 179th Academy Class. Judge David A. Trimmer, Fairfield County Court of Common Pleas, issued the Oath of Office.

We recently learned of the passing of former Patrolman William C. Cattran, age 89 of St. Clairsville, formerly of Lancaster, on February 27, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Bill was a graduate of the 49th Academy Class, January 24th, 1958. He started his career with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and later ventured into the insurance industry.

With our condolences we report the passing of surviving spouses Constance Feightner and Nancy Johnson.

Constance A. Feightner, age 94, surviving spouse of Retired Staff Lieutenant Richard C. Feightner, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2026. Richard graduated from the 44th academy class on November 4, 1955, and passed away on December 16, 2020.

Nancy D. Johnson, age 81, surviving spouse of Retired Sergeant James A. Johnson, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2026. James graduated from the 73rd academy class on December 30, 1966, and passed away on March 7, 2015.

With our condolences, we report the passing of retired Captain James W. Smith, age 93, a graduate of the 43rd Academy Class. Jim retired from service in November of 1984 after 30 years, last serving as the commander of the Massillon District. Following his OSP career, Jim worked an additional 10 years serving as the chief of the Perry Township Police Department. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 71 years, Gloria (Park) Smith​​​.

Among those who survive him are his sons, retired Trooper Kevin Smith of the 108th Academy Class, retired Staff Lieutenant ​Joel Smith of the 112th Academy Class and the grandfather of active Lieutenant Joel Smith Jr.
