May is Foster Care Awareness Month 💙

Right now, thousands of children in North Carolina need safe, loving, and supportive homes. Every child deserves stability, encouragement, and someone who believes in them.

Foster parents have the opportunity to make a life-changing difference — whether it’s providing a temporary safe place, support during a difficult time, or simply showing a child they are cared for.

In North Carolina, there is an ongoing need for more foster families, especially for sibling groups, teens, and children with special needs. Even one caring family can change the course of a child’s future.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a foster parent, or if you just have questions about the process, we would love to talk with you. Message us anytime to learn more about how you can help make a difference.

Together, we can give more children the love, stability, and hope they deserve. 💙

A new Meg’s Place is on the horizon!

Meg’s Place Yancey County will open in Burnsville, NC later this summer. The home itself is the result of collaboration between Yancey County, The Yancey County Opioid Funding, and Meg’s Place.

Meg’s Place exists to provide a safe, stable place for children in foster care to land during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. In McDowell County, one of our greatest accomplishments has been helping ensure that children no longer have to sleep in the DSS office while waiting for placement. Every child deserves comfort, safety, and care — especially in times of crisis.

Now, we are working to solve that same issue in Yancey County.

Funding for the furnishing of the home was provided in part by the Yancey Fund, an affiliate fund of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The Yancey Fund is an endowment created to support the charitable needs of our community.

We are deeply grateful for the partnerships, support, and community collaboration that make this work possible. Together, we are creating a softer place to land for children in need.

As we reflect on an incredible Night of Hope fundraising dinner & auction, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who attended, supported, and shared in our mission to help children in foster care. 💙

Over the past few days, we’ve highlighted the amazing speakers who made the evening so meaningful. Their stories remind us why this work matters and the impact we are making in our community.

If you weren’t able to attend the event but would still like to make a difference, there is still an opportunity to support the mission of the Live Like Megan Foundation. Every donation helps us continue providing hope, support, and resources to children in foster care.

Nick Garner, son of Trisha & Jason Garner, spoke about his journey through foster care from a young age.

Nick spoke with incredible faith about the path God led him on - a journey that ultimately brought he and his siblings to the perfect family for them. While foster care often comes with challenges and uncertainty, Nick’s story was a wonderful reminder that hope, healing, and purpose can come from the hardest seasons.

His testimony encouraged everyone in the room and reminded us why this mission matters so deeply. We’re so thankful that Nick shared his story and inspired us with his positive outlook.

Our Executive Director, Amber Vess, shared the incredible impact Meg’s Place has made in McDowell County — and what an exciting story it is!

The highlight? Since the opening of Meg’s Place, not one child has had to sleep at DSS even a single night! 🎉

The impact doesn’t stop there. In 2026 alone:
✨ 99 family visits were held in the home
✨ More than 68 foster children received resources
✨ Over 48 kinship families received support and resources

Amber was also thrilled to announce that our second Meg’s Place will be opening in Yancey County this year!

We are beyond grateful to see the success of Meg’s Place in McDowell County and cannot wait to watch our impact continue to grow as we expand our footprint and serve even more children and families. ❤️

We were honored to hear from Trisha Garner at our Night of Hope event this week. Speaking not only as a county commissioner, but also as a former foster parent, she shared her perspective on the impact that the Live Like Megan Foundation is making in McDowell County.

Her words were a reminder that supporting children and families in foster care is not just a personal calling — it strengthens an entire community. We are grateful for leaders who see the value of investing in vulnerable children and who continue to champion hope, healing, and support for foster families across our county.

Thank you, Commissioner Garner, for your encouragement, your advocacy, and for standing beside the children and families we serve.

Owen & Cayden were two of the hunters in our Outdoor Adventure program last fall. Our annual bear hunt has served 23 kids so far with a 100% success rate!

These boys were thrilled to receive their mounted bears at the Night of Hope event, and their excitement was a joy to watch.

At our Night of Hope event, we had the privilege of hearing from Serrina Stevens — a Licensed Clinical Social Worker whose story deeply moved everyone in the room.

Serrina spoke from both professional experience and personal experience. As a youth who spent time in foster care herself, she understands firsthand the fear, uncertainty, and challenges that so many children face. But she also knows the life-changing impact that caring adults can make.

Through her story, Serrina shared how her foster and adoptive parents helped shape her future, offering stability, encouragement, and love during the moments she needed it most. Because someone opened their home and their heart, she was able to grow into a passionate advocate for children and families navigating foster care today.

Her message was powerful: foster families matter. The need is great, but so is the impact one family can have on the life of a child.

At the Live Like Megan Foundation, we believe every child deserves safety, support, and hope — and every foster family deserves a community standing behind them.

Thank you, Serrina, for sharing your story so courageously and for continuing to use your voice to advocate for children in foster care. Your life is proof that love, support, and stability can change generations. 💙
