Structure Fire 10/02/2026
The Fire Department was dispatched to the 100 block of Blaine Avenue this morning for a report of a structure fire.
The initial report stated that the caller reported smoke coming from the residence, that children were inside the residence, and that no one was answering the door.
The first-arriving apparatus were Car 20 and Engine 21 at 0755 hours, with a report of smoke showing from the residence. Engine 21 only had two personnel on the apparatus.
Due to no clear confirmation that there was no one inside the residence, the officer on Engine 21 made the decision to conduct a primary search of the house by himself while the driver of Engine 21 pulled a handline to the rear of the structure, where access was made. Smoke was found throughout the residence on the first and second floors. Active fire was found on the first floor in the kitchen.
THANKFULLY, there were no occupants found inside the residence.
Car 20 and Engine 21 were on scene for a total of 2 minutes and 30 seconds before Medic 28 arrived with two personnel for additional manpower. Medic 28 responded from the hospital after recently transporting a patient there.
The Fire Department had a total staffing of 11 personnel for today, a reduction from 13 personnel, established earlier this year due to budget cuts by city administration. This highlights the challenges of operating with limited staffing, particularly during the critical first few minutes of a structure fire.
When there is a possibility of occupants being trapped inside a burning building, having sufficient personnel on the initial response is critical. Staffing directly affects how quickly crews can establish a water supply, deploy hose lines, conduct searches, and address fire conditions.
Today, our members were faced with a situation that required immediate decisions and action. We are thankful that no lives were lost and appreciate the professionalism and dedication of the firefighters who responded.
Our members will always do everything within their ability to protect the lives and property of the community we serve. However, we must also recognize the importance of providing them with the staffing and resources necessary to do that job safely and effectively. Having only two personnel on a fire apparatus is DANGEROUS and UNACCEPTABLE to personnel and the citizens of the City of Marion.
A reminder to our community: Please ensure that your home has working smoke detectors on every level and inside and outside sleeping areas. A working smoke detector can provide the critical seconds needed to escape a fire.
