Staffing Saves Lives.
The New York City Council is pushing to restore a fifth firefighter on FDNY engine companies because they recognize what firefighters have known for decades: adequate staffing matters.
Studies continue to show that increasing crew size improves fireground efficiency, enhances firefighter safety, and leads to better outcomes for the citizens we serve.
Here in Marion, our firefighters routinely respond with only two firefighters assigned to an apparatus. Despite these challenges, our members continue to answer the call every day and provide the highest level of service possible to our community.
The conversation taking place in New York highlights an important truth that applies to departments of every size: when emergency calls come in, staffing levels directly impact the speed, safety, and effectiveness of the response.
Safe staffing is not about convenience. It is about firefighter safety, public safety, and ensuring that every emergency receives the resources necessary to achieve the best possible outcome.
