Emory & Henry’s School of Health Sciences photographed and live streamed Appalachian Center for Hope’s Third Annual Reviving Hope in Our Backyard Conference. The event explored how supporting recovery efforts strengthens families, grows the workforce, improves public health, and builds more resilient communities in Southwest Virginia.

One aspect of our Recovery Court program is Community Service/Outreach. Each participant completes a minimum of 100 hours. We have some talented participants who take pride in projects like this one at Freedom Tabernacle Ministries. Check out the new roofs some of our guys are installing on the playground. As 2026 begins to wind down, we're reflecting on the people, partnerships, and shared commitment that continue to shape Appalachian Center for Hope.

From strengthening recovery resources to bringing community voices together, our work has always been rooted in one belief: lasting change happens when communities work together.

We've seen what collaboration can make possible. And we know there is still important work ahead.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more about the work we've accomplished, the people and partnerships making it possible, and our vision for the future.

Because building a healthier, stronger Southwest Virginia takes all of us.

As part of Recovery Lives Here, we’re inviting families and loved ones to help us create Remembering Our Neighbors, a traveling community exhibit honoring Smyth County residents whose lives were lost to substance use disorder.

We want to know about the person you remember. What did they love? What brought them joy? What made them laugh? What is a memory you never want to forget?

You can share a photo and memories through our guided online form, and we’ll help thoughtfully shape what you share into their exhibit story. And if sharing through an online form doesn’t feel right for you, that’s okay. We would be honored to work with you one-on-one to help tell your loved one’s story. Help us remember our neighbors.

As part of Recovery Lives Here, Appalachian Center for Hope is creating Remembering Our Neighbors—a traveling community exhibit honoring Smyth County residents whose lives were lost to substance use disorder.

We are inviting families and loved ones to help us tell their stories. We want to know the person you remember: the things they loved, what brought them joy, the lives they touched, and the memories you still carry. You don’t have to be a writer, and you don’t have to know exactly what to say. We’ll help thoughtfully shape what you share into their exhibit story, and you’ll have an opportunity to review it before anything is publicly displayed.

Recovery Lives Here.

For the past several months, we’ve been working quietly on a project that means a great deal to us.

Recovery Lives Here is a new Appalachian Center for Hope initiative created to change the way we see and talk about substance use disorder and recovery in our community. Because substance use disorder may be part of someone’s story. It is never the whole story.

Through a video series and short film, we’re sharing the stories of people from our community who are living in recovery—not simply where they’ve been, but who they are today: parents, professionals, artists, advocates, friends and neighbors.

The initiative will also include Remembering Our Neighbors, a traveling exhibit honoring Smyth County residents whose lives were lost to substance use disorder. Through their photographs and the memories of those who loved them, we’ll celebrate who they were, what they loved, the lives they touched, and the ways they are remembered.

There is much more to come, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
