"Benjamin is delightfully approachable, the right amount of funny and a genuine teacher. I got a lot out of the masterclass and can't wait for the next one."

Invasive Plant of the Week: Japanese Hops (Humulus japonicus)

Fast-growing and hard to control, Japanese hops is an invasive vine that can quickly take over fences, trees, and shrubs in your yard. It forms dense growth that blocks sunlight, smothers native plants, and reduces the overall health and diversity of your landscape.

If you spot it and act early, removing Japanese hops before it spreads can save you time and protect nearby natural areas.

Love the look of fountain grass but not its invasive behavior? There’s a better way...

Try swapping it for native grasses like little bluestem, switchgrass, or sideoats grama. They give you that same soft, airy movement while being lower maintenance and actually supporting local wildlife. Perfect for adding texture and interest to any yard without the extra hassle.

If you’re ready to refresh your landscaping with plants that truly belong here, the Indiana Native Plant Society has great ideas and plant lists to get you started: https://indiananativeplants.org/

That “fast-growing tree” in your yard might not be what you think…

Tree of heaven may look similar to black walnut at first glance, but it’s highly invasive, spreads aggressively, and can quickly take over your space (and your neighbors’ too).

If you’re noticing mystery trees popping up around your yard or fence line, it’s worth taking a closer look. You could save yourself a lot of future headaches by catching this invasive species early.
