Parents and Students the 2022 Leadership Marion! Alumni are inviting youth voices to the table, to create a Marion Youth Advisory Board (YAB) for the Marion WEC Community Center (Marion Youth Center).

The first meeting is Monday, October 24, 2022 at 6 PM at the new Peace and Freedom Building, 790 Kenton Ave., Marion, OH.

We are currently In need of youth to commit to be on our youth advisory board. Specifically in grades 7- 12. We need the voices of our kids to help design programs that are of interest to them. We’re excited about the community support for the project!

The Leadership Marion class of 2022 is excited to have as our project coordinating the planning for Marion WEC Community Center "After-Hours" activities and programming for 12-18 year-olds in downtown Marion. Working with the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce Marion City Schools the Marion Family YMCA, Marion Matters and many other community organizations, we plan to offer a variety of activities and services to the area youth beginning this fall.

Each year, the participants in the Leadership Marion program, run by the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, develop a project to address a need in the community by coordinating with community organizations and partners. 2022 was no exception. Mark your calendar and plan to attend a ZOOM meeting, July 19th from 7 to 8 pm Community Youth Center Planning meeting. The alumni chose the Community Youth Center as its project to coordinate with community organizations to offer after-school and weekend programming and activities at the downtown Withrow Equity Center.

Alumni have had informal conversations about this project with many of the local Marion organizations, including Marion City Schools, the Marion Family YMCA, the The Boys & Girls Club of Marion County, Marion Matters, Inc., The Ohio State University at Marion and Marion Technical College and local parent groups. They've have also done a survey of more than 200 local teenagers about their needs and wishes for the community.

At this point, the Alumni feel it would be best to gather with representatives of as many of these organizations as we can to brainstorm activities and programming, more community partners, marketing to the kids of Marion.

Simultaneously we are reaching out to more youth groups in the area for their input, ideas and buy-in.

They are planning to have a few organizational meetings over the summer and hope to launch programming around the time school begins in the fall.

The 2022 Leadership Marion! Alumni are very excited about this opportunity to provide a safe welcoming space for our kids to gather in the downtown area.

We are grateful for the support we have received from the community thus far and look forward to partnering with you.
