Last but not least, meet Lindsay! Lindsay comes to Perry County from Colorful Colorado! Originally from Colorado Springs, Lindsay attended the University of Denver, where she studied anthropology. She was drawn to Perry County for its incredibly significant Civil Rights history, and her love for the outdoors. During the week, Lindsay enjoys spending time with the CLIMB students, as well as helping out at the Adult Daycare Center in Uniontown, which is also her Wednesday engagement! Outside of programming, she can be found writing postcards to her friends and family, testing out a new recipe for scones or cookies, or exploring the trails at Perry Lakes Park. Lindsay has loved her time so much in Perry County that she has decided to stay on the Project Horseshoe Farm team after this Fellowship year!

Community Leaders in Medicine & Beyond, better known as CLIMB, is Project Horseshoe Farm’s new high-impact, hands-on program for local high school students!

Three afternoons each week, students work alongside Horseshoe Farm Fellows to strengthen their academic, service, and leadership skills while exploring careers in healthcare. Every week brings something new! So far, students have visited and learned from organizations such as Perry County EMS, Cahaba Mental Health Center, Lighthouse Mobile Women’s Clinic, and Sowing Seeds of Hope. Students also build meaningful relationships in the community by regularly visiting residents at the Perry County Nursing Home and accompanying Fellows on visits to Health Partners. Along the way, they receive individualized academic support tailored to their goals, whether that’s preparing for the ACT, navigating college applications and scholarships, or exploring future career paths.

Nathan joins us from Chicago, Illinois, where he studied psychology and film at Northwestern University. With aspirations of working in mental health and social work, he was drawn to Perry County by its reputation for community, connection, and meaningful service opportunities. Nathan can often be found with his hands in the dirt in the Community Garden. In his free time, Nathan enjoys cooking, drawing, hiking, and spending time with friends. His favorite local dish is the fried catfish at Lottie’s, which he tried within an hour of arriving in Perry County! He has also loved exploring Perry Lakes Park, getting to know Perry County’s history, and learning to play dominoes from the folks at Project Horseshoe Farm’s Community Center Program. Nathan looks forward to deepening his understanding of community health and building relationships with the people of Perry County during his year here.

Say hello to our next Fellow, Kym! Kym hails from the vibrant city of Memphis, Tennessee, home to blues, barbecue, and her alma mater, Rhodes College, where she studied neuroscience. A true student-athlete, Kym balanced labs and lectures with college volleyball and track, bringing both brain and brawn to campus life. Off the field, she’s always been drawn to movement and music—she loves to dance, enjoys all genres of music, and is especially excited to learn how to line dance during her time in Alabama. An aspiring pediatrician, Kym spends her time in Perry County at HeadStart preschool, volunteering with 2nd and 3rd graders at R.C. Hatch for Power Hours, helping out with ACT tutoring at Francis Marion School and Breakthrough Charter School, and coaching the local track and volleyball teams. Thanks for all that you do, Kym! 🏐

Kayla joins us from the sunny streets of San Bernardino, California, just a quick 40-minute drive from the magic of Disneyland—which she definitely took advantage of growing up (her favorite ride? Guardians of the Galaxy, hands down). A proud graduate of the University of Redlands, Kayla charted her own academic path by designing a major in Biomedical Humanities and Global Health Ethics. As the oldest of four siblings, Kayla takes her big sister role seriously, and her close-knit family makes it a point to spend quality time together every weekend. Whether it’s trips to LA, catching waves at the beach, shopping at the mall, or just kicking back at home, her family knows how to turn everyday moments into cherished memories. Currently deep in MCAT prep mode, Kayla has her eyes set on medical school and is considering a future in family medicine. She’s excited to bring her curiosity, warmth, and West Coast energy to Marion, where she has loved trying Southern delicacies like catfish and fried okra. Welcome to Perry County, Kayla!
