Membership Matters: Why MBEP?

The Monterey Bay region's biggest challenges—and opportunities—can't be solved by any one organization alone.

At MBEP, business, government, education, healthcare, nonprofits, and community leaders come together to advance solutions in housing, workforce development, broadband, childcare, economic development, innovation, and more.

When you become an MBEP member, you gain more than a membership—you gain a seat at the table where regional partnerships are formed, ideas become action, and the future of our region takes shape.

MBEP's Chief Growth Officer, Lavera Alexander, was honored to join aviation leaders from across the globe this week as a panelist at the AIAA AVIATION Forum, one of the industry's premier gatherings focused on the future of aerospace innovation.

During the discussion, Lavera highlighted an important message: successful integration of advanced aviation requires more than innovative aircraft—it requires infrastructure readiness, public trust, and meaningful community participation.

Drawing on MBEP's leadership of the California Advanced Air Mobility Corridors Initiative (CAAMCI), she shared how the Monterey Bay region is helping create a model for integrating advanced aviation through public-private collaboration, workforce development, community engagement, and a focus on real-world public benefit.

As next-generation aviation technologies continue to evolve, ensuring communities have a voice in shaping that future will be critical to long-term success.

How will changes to federal safety-net programs impact healthcare access, food security, public services, and our local economy?

County of Santa Cruz's Health Services Agency, in partnership with DataShare Santa Cruz County, is hosting an important community conversation and launching the new H.R. 1 Impacts Dashboard—a local resource designed to help track and understand the potential impacts of federal policy changes in Santa Cruz County.

This data-driven effort will help community leaders, service providers, policymakers, and residents better understand how changes to programs such as Medi-Cal and CalFresh may affect individuals, families, healthcare systems, and the broader economy.

Thank you to Jessica Pasko and Lookout Santa Cruz for highlighting the progress of the California Advanced Air Mobility Corridors Initiative (CAAMCI) and the growing momentum behind advanced air mobility on the Central Coast.

Transformational regional projects don't happen on their own. They require collaboration across industry, education, government, workforce partners, and community organizations, along with the sustained coordination needed to move ideas from concept to implementation.

Through CAAMCI, partners across the Monterey Bay region are working together to connect airports, advance critical infrastructure, support workforce development, and create new opportunities for innovation and economic growth. As MBEP moves the project into its next phase, we're proud to continue working alongside our many partners to help turn a shared regional vision into lasting impact.

MBEP's Director of Technology & Digital Access, Maure Gildea, attended the California Hydrogen Summit yesterday, joining leaders from across the state to explore the future of hydrogen and clean energy innovation.

A standout example of Central Coast leadership came from Santa Cruz METRO, which shared its transition to zero-emission transit, including the procurement of 53 hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses. METRO is also connecting transportation and housing goals through plans to redevelop transit centers into community hubs that could provide 175 affordable housing units in Santa Cruz and Watsonville over the next seven years.

As our region advances innovation in housing, transportation, aviation, and clean energy, partnerships and investments like these help strengthen both economic resilience and quality of life.
