September is Recovery Month, a time to recognize how common substance use disorder is and how stigma can make it harder for people to seek help.

Stigma can have real consequences:

• 1 in 7 Americans will experience a substance use disorder in their lifetime.

• More than 20% of individuals reported concerns about the impact on their employment.

• More than 17% were concerned about how their community would view them.

• 7 of 9 commonly cited drivers of the opioid epidemic are partially or entirely driven by stigma.

Substance use disorder can affect anyone. Recovery deserves support, compassion, and access to care without judgment.

Parents don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes the most powerful thing they can do is lead by example.

By sharing her recovery journey in an age-appropriate way, she created a safe space for honest conversations with her children. As they grew older, they felt comfortable coming to her about friends who were drinking or using drugs because they knew they wouldn't be judged.

Open communication, active listening, and modeling healthy choices can help build trust that lasts a lifetime.

A few things to remember:

🚗 Avoid storing naloxone in your car when possible
🌡️ Protect it from excessive heat and direct light
🔄 Replace expired or improperly stored naloxone when you can
🚨 If it’s the only naloxone available during an overdose, use it
