LTRC Montreal Pre-Conference Workshop — Places Still Available

Assessing Languages Beyond English: Global Principles and Local Practice

June 2 (6 hours, lunch included)

Facilitators: Sonja Zimmermann and Katharina Karges

Language testing and assessment has historically been shaped by English-focused research and practice. At the same time, assessment in Languages Other Than English (LOTEs), including sign languages, is widely conducted across diverse linguistic, educational, and sociocultural contexts. Opportunities for sustained exchange across languages and with the broader language assessment community remain limited.

This workshop is designed to foster cross-linguistic dialogue and professional exchange, encouraging participants to connect global assessment principles with local practices.

Participants will gain:
• Insights into language assessment across different language contexts
• Opportunities for professional exchange across regions
• Practical reflections on assessment in LOTE contexts

Add this workshop to your LTRC registration (https://www.iltaonline.com/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1771354&group=). If you have already registered, contact [email protected] to include it.

Announcing the 2026 Jacqueline Ross TOEFL® Dissertation Award Winner

ETS and the TOEFL Program have named Dr. Laura Schildt (Ghent University) as the recipient of the 2026 Jacqueline Ross TOEFL® Dissertation Award for her dissertation:

“The Policy Web: A Multi-Layered Analysis of Language Testing for Migration”

Dr. Schildt’s research provides exceptional and original scholarship on migration-related language testing. By examining language testing policy as a dynamic and negotiated process involving multiple stakeholders, her work offers valuable empirical insights into the roles of language testers, policymakers, and the broader sociopolitical forces shaping test use in migration contexts. Her study makes a significant contribution to both language testing and language policy research.

We also warmly congratulate the two distinguished finalists:
• Dr. Ping-Lin Chuang – Research on integrated L2 argumentative writing assessment
• Dr. Haeun Kim – Research on picture-based narrative writing tasks for young learners

Dr. Schildt will be formally honored at the 2026 LTRC Banquet and Awards Ceremony. Please join us in celebrating these outstanding scholarly achievements!
