We had such a great time celebrating with our Cobb County community this past weekend!

Along with the grand opening of the Living Classroom, visitors helped us count pollinators for the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, checked out educational exhibits and demonstrations, visited with our community partners, found gardening and conservation resources, and enjoyed kids’ activities and crafts. There was a little something for everyone!

A big thank you to everyone who came out, volunteered, shared their knowledge, or helped make the day possible. This is exactly what we hoped the Living Classroom would be, a place where our community can come together, learn, and get excited about gardening and the natural world around us.

If you didn’t make it Saturday, come see us! The Living Classroom is outside the Cobb County Extension Office and ready for you to explore.

August 21 & 22 is the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, and you can be part of this important community science project right here in Cobb County!

Pollinators help keep our gardens, ecosystems, and food systems thriving. By taking time to observe and count the bees, butterflies, flies, beetles, wasps, and other insects visiting our flowers, we can contribute valuable data that helps us better understand and protect these hardworking garden visitors.

Did you know taking just 15 minutes to count pollinators can help scientists better understand and protect our local ecosystems? Join us at the Green Meadows Preserve Community Garden for the Great Southeastern Pollinator Census!

Come on in and meet your neighbors! On Friday, August 21st, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM, the North Marietta Neighborhood Community Garden is participating in the Great Southeastern Pollinator Census—and we’d love your help!

Whether you’re a seasoned plant lover or just wondering what we grow, come say hi, chat with experienced Master Gardeners on site, and become a citizen scientist. By giving just 15 minutes of your time to count pollinators, you can support real research making a difference for our local bees, butterflies, and beneficial bugs! 🦋

Our milkweed is popping! How many insects can you spot on this one plant? Did you guess somewhere around 40?! Can you spot the monarch caterpillar hiding under the leaves? How about the carpenter bee grabbing lunch? Zoom in closely on the upper left stem and you’ll see tons of tiny aphids. The black and red things are milkweed bugs. Nature moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. Test your insect spoting skills and visit us at the Living Classroom Garden Grand Opening and Great Southeastern Pollinator Census Event

Love gardening? Ready to make a difference? The 2027 Cobb County Master Gardener Volunteer Program is now accepting applications!

Become part of a community of lifelong learners who are passionate about gardening, education, and serving others. As a University of Georgia Extension Master Gardener, you’ll receive research-based horticultural training and use that knowledge to educate the community through gardens, workshops, and volunteer projects.

✨The 2027 class will feature hands-on learning in our new Living Classroom Garden and a full day focused on native and invasive plants.

💚In 2025, Cobb Master Gardeners contributed more than 17,000 volunteer hours to our community.

Look who just stopped by! 🦋

This is the very first Monarch to appear in the living classroom garden at UGA Cobb Extension, a wonderful testament to the idea that if you plant the right things, they will come. When we focus on native plants and intentional habitats, we create an environment where local wildlife doesn't just visit, but survives and thrives.

The timing couldn’t be better. We are excited to announce that the garden has officially been added to the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail as site number 452! This network connects habitats across the region, and we are proud to contribute to public education and pollinator conservation right here in our community.

Come celebrate this milestone and participate in citizen science with us:

Applications are officially OPEN for the 2027 Cobb County Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Program!

If you love learning about plants, enjoy sharing knowledge with others, and want to make a meaningful difference in your community, you've found your place.

The Master Gardener Extension Volunteer (MGEV) Program is so much more than a gardening class. It is the University of Georgia's educational outreach program that trains volunteers to become trusted sources of research-based horticultural information.
