The events of the past 10 days have been heartbreaking. I found out last night about Charlie’s passing. Today as I attend Mike Gaeta’s funeral, it’s wishful thinking that maybe they are having a conversation somewhere. Maybe there’s a grand stage with a huge cast that are preparing a show for when we arrive.
I met Charlie Brown at Backstreet like so many others. I watched the HBO special too, back in the day. There has never been a performer that has had a greater influence on me and what I think the art of drag should be like.
I was so completely excited for him to be our headliner for the Breaking Point on St. Patrick’s Day 2004, for our Grand Opening. As I introduced him, Charlie came out of a limousine from the parking lot in front of the club. Already talking on a microphone; the front doors flew open and he started performing. What a moment, that is probably my favorite memory!
He hosted so many shows and several competitions at LeBuZZ over the years. I was so happy to be able to do the Roast for him. He was infamous for poking fun at married couples and they loved every second. Always there in good times and bad, always supporting us, and we tried to support him.
I found myself watching many of his videos on YouTube last night as sleep wouldn’t come. There are so many incredible perspectives in these performances. These days people throw out words like Icon and Legend very easily. Charlie Brown was both and Atlanta owes him, we owe him these monikers. He loved to say that he was just a man in a dress, but we all know that he was so much more. He was proof that you could be yourself and do anything on your own terms. He was an inspiration. Xoxo
Rest in peace,
Drag Icon & Legend,
Mr. Charlie Brown
