William Root House

William Root House Visit one of the oldest and best preserved houses remaining in the Atlanta area. Mr. Root was one of Marietta’s earliest merchants and its first druggist.

Award-winning interactive exhibits examine the lives of the Root family and their enslaved house servants. The Root House was built circa 1845 at the corner of Church and Lemon Streets by Hannah and William Root, early settlers of Marietta. Today the Greek Revival offers a glimpse of the home life of a middle class merchant and his family. Volunteer docents tell the story of the house, the Root fa

mily, and life in Marietta in the 1850s. Outside, visitors can view the recreated kitchen and see the working 1850s cookstove.

This summer, our Jr. Historian Summer Camps invite students to step into the past and uncover the full story. Students will master essential frontier skills—learning everything from churning butter and sewing on a button to writing with a quill pen. The exploration continues in the Root House gardens, where students will learn to differentiate between ornamental, medicinal, and edible plants, and discover how those very plants can create distinct, varied flavors of honey. DYK? Prior to the 1800s, a woman would simply wear her best dress on her wedding day. Earth tones such as yellow or green were most popular. That changed when Queen Victoria wore a cream-colored silk satin dress with an overlay of white lace for her wedding on February 10, 1840. But Victoria didn’t wear white lace to flaunt her wealth or emphasize her purity. She wanted to show off the handmade Honiton lace trim in an effort to revitalize the struggling lace industry amid the Industrial Revolution.

The authentic 1860s dress on display here is made of cream-colored silk taffeta with cord and bead trim. It's currently on display at the Root House as part of our Victorian Wedding exhibit - on display through February. Learn more at RootHouseMuseum.com/Wedding.
