Kit Cummings and the Power of Peace

Using the experience he gained resolving conflict in some of the most dangerous areas in the world, he applies his principles to bring about change in prisons, schools, corporations and the faith-based community. On MLK Day, 2020, Kit was recognized by the NAACP receiving their Martin Luther King, Jr. Living the Dream Award for his contribution to civil rights and his work with at-risk youth and p

rison reform. He was also appointed to the Georgia House of Representatives Gang Prevention and Intervention Commission as a result of the passing of the anti-gang bill HB750 under Chairman Rep. The majority of Kit’s work now focuses on interrupting and redirecting under-served youth. Kit has been in over a hundred prisons, jails, detention centers, and rehab facilities and worked with over ten thousand prisoners and offenders. He has journeyed on tours through Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, and has negotiated peace between some of the most notorious gangs inside the U.S. He delivered an address about his powerful peace projects at the Gandhi Global Peace Summit in Durban, South Africa to representatives from the Gandhi, King, and Mandela organizations, as well as other iconic peacemakers from around the world. Kit has taken his Forty Days to Freedom program into dangerous La Mesa prison in Tijuana, Mexico to teach prisoners nonviolence, as well as working with addicts and at-risk youth in some of the toughest areas of that cartel war-torn border city. Kit has planted seeds of peace all around the world. Kit has authored six books, including the award-winning Peace Behind the Wire, a Nonviolent Resolution which has been endorsed by the King Family. His latest book, The New Convict Code, Bringing Peace to the Streets from Behind the Wire, flips the script on prison reform and aims to shatter the pipeline from schools to prisons. Meet our young friend Isaac.

As some of you know, I’m a part of a men’s Bible study on Friday morning called “The Misfits.”

Originally invited by my good friend Hicks Malonson, I’ve been a part of this knucklehead group at 7 AM on Friday mornings for quite a number of years.

Somewhere along the way Hicks connected with a faithful preacher name Julius Bubu in Uganda. He became a part of our trusted little group and attends faithfully every week via Zoom—all the way from Africa.

He has an amazing Ministry and takes care of so many children in an area of the world that I can’t imagine my spoiled western self being able to bear.

A nonprofit called Beautiful Feet has provided tuition for young Isaac to start college- he has been officially approved and received his tuition.

We received this “thank you” from him this morning. No, young brother, thank YOU.

Please pray for Isaac, for Brother Julius, and for all those precious children that he serves and brings into a relationship with his Father.

And a huge shout out to my friend Hicks for letting me be part of this wonderful group. 😊🙏🏻

Great time this week hanging with my brothers at Canine Cellmates!

These “Returning Citizens” train rescue-animals and learn valuable life skills to prepare to re-enter society. Structure, discipline, emotional regulation skills, and unconditional love allows both the dogs and these men to heal and grow.

You should see the work that founder Susan Jacobs-Meadows and her team is doing there- true rehabilitation. I have the honor and privilege of teaching conflict resolution each quarter. I love our partnership with Canine Cellmates!

What a fast fantastic day with POPP partnering with Northview Church and the Lakewood Church of Hope to feed the Carver Panther football team down in the Lakewood community.

What’s up beautiful family! Join us tomorrow night, Tuesday at 7:00 PM EST for Session Three of “Forty Days of Prayer, Seven Steps to a Spiritual Breakthrough.”

Last week session revolved around the question Jesus asked the paralytic, “Do you want to get well?” Great discussion followed!

Tomorrow night’s session is the second question Jesus asked to a blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?”

This discussion goes into getting very specific in our prayers and going out and searching for “God‘s Fingerprints.”

He walked into the Michigan Department of Corrections in 1978.
Last month... he walked out a free man.
Meet my dear brother, Cary.

I had the privilege of working with Cary for more than three years inside one of Michigan's toughest maximum-security prisons, in the early days of the POPP Movement. After success in GA we took it to the midwest and saw amazing results.

Together we helped lead the Power of Peace Project, where more than 1,000 men graduated from our programs. During that time, violence dropped by more than 50%, and that prison became three to five times less violent than every other maximum-security prison in Michigan.

Those men made history.

Cary was one of my most faithful and trusted leaders. He impacted countless lives behind those walls. He's one of the strongest men I've ever known—and he has the battle scars to prove it.

There was a time when violence defined his life.
Then God changed his heart. And through our friendship, God used Cary to change mine as well.

After 48 years, my brother is finally breathing free-world air.
Now it's time to go to work... Just like we dreamed about all those years ago.

The world needs your wisdom.
It needs your strength.
It needs your experience.

Especially the young men who are heading toward the same razor wire you spent nearly half a century behind.

I'm honored to stand beside you, my brother.
You are living proof that grace is greater than our past.
Welcome home. The best chapter is just beginning.

“Einstein said imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Kit is building workshops and town halls that bring divided people together — rivals, kids, city councils torn in half. And it all starts with one principle: seek first to understand the other person.

Both directions. As Dr. King said, study your opponent until you know their position better than they do. That’s how you build a community that lasts. 🕊️

You can win the argument and still lose the person.

Kit learned a different way in some of the hardest environments on earth. From prisons, schools, and other places full of conflict. His goal was never to be right. It was to win people, especially the ones hardest to love.

The real lesson: turn enemies into friends. 🕊️

“He made me a Lord’s Supper etching — the most beautiful thing on my office wall. And then they executed him in 2019. I see it every day.”

Kit shares how he reached a death row inmate: not by excusing what he did, but by seeking to understand him, finding common ground, and walking with him.

A reminder that there’s shared humanity in even the hardest places. 🕊️
